Review :

It's no 'Mall Cop' if that's what you're thinking....

This movie tries really hard to be a family friendly film and it succeeds by not throwing around a lot of swear words and having a very simple story to it, but it also failed miserably in the fact that it added a sappy romance and a very serious side story about a man who is clearly unhappy in his marriage.

Gordon Glass (Miller, who also wrote and directed) moves to Hollywood to pursue his dreams of becoming an actor. We can tell he's a nice guy, a real sweetheart and is the type of guy that a lot of people would take advantage of, or more heart than brains. He stays with his cousin, Dude (Harris) and his wife, Karen (Taylor) and their children. He gets a job as a security guard of a movie studio. He works with a guy named Trot (Jones) and his boss (Earles) is somewhat of a psycho. In his adventures, he meets a waitress named Sally (Muller) and befriends two kids on the basketball courts to the chagrin of their father, Lalo (Gugliemi), who doesn't spend too much time with them.

Family films are supposed to be appropriate for all ages and not make the kiddies ask you questions about what they're talking about on screen. There are several instances in Gordon Glass where the young ones will be asking all sorts of inappropriate questions (porno talent scout, gay man chasing another gay man around the bar, extremely underage drinking). If you're going to make a family film, it has to be more slapstick funny than "from the heart" funny. Paul Blart: Mall Cop didn't succeed in the box office because Kevin James had heart and was sweet and solved marital problems. No, it worked because he was a funny, bumbling idiot who had to step up against the bad guy. There is zero protagonist to speak of in Gordon Glass. The main character just kind of ambles through the movie blindly and has all but forgotten about the reason he went to California in the first place until Trot mentions an audition that they can crash.

I guess I just expected more Hollywood hi-jinx and less therapy. What was supposed to be a cute, fun little movie was just a dull, mind-numbing experience. More reviews at www.soveryterry.com Final Grade: D-
