I guess I really don't care.

Sometimes you just want to watch a sleazy B movie even if you are warned that it is really low budget. You just want some serial killer sleaze to watch mindlessly.

Lots of naked bodies, aberrant sex, and gore: all combined to make a film that will never see a theater screen, but will make a good slasher film for the aficionados.

Don't look for anything more, because there isn't anything. No great acting, not even good acting. No storyline that makes any real sense. Things just seem to jump all over the place.

Charles Durning will not be adding to his long list of award nominations with his appearance in this film.

Separate tables

The lonely souls that are forced to live in places like Woodlands, one imagines would be more attuned to bonding with peers and form long time friendships with similar folks in their own circumstances. Alas, the people in this lovely Irish senior center appear to be mean spirited individuals at the end of their lives. The lead bitter existences as they have no interest in mingling with people they clearly abhor.

We come into this milieu where a four of the residents don't have a place where to spend Christmas. It is Ellie, the young sister of the woman that runs the place to stay behind to take care of this quartet. When she doesn't get anywhere with them, she lets them all know how she feels about their rudeness and ill manners. Instead of angering them, she rouses them up and make them come to their senses.

The foursome consists of Donald, the retired judge, who must have things his way. Georgia, the former showgirl who loves her martinis in a certain way. The bickering sisters Heather and Hazel Nightingale complete the group. When Ellie explodes and tells them truths they haven't heard in a while, they wake up to reality. Thus, for the Christmas dinner, Ellie decides to take the residents to a nearby town to get the ingredients. Together, they will have a great time and come together in ways no one even thought possible.

Anthony Byrne directed the film, which is based on a Mave Benchley short story. He couldn't have asked for a better cast, Vanessa Redgrave, Joss Ackland, Imelda Staunton and Brenda Flicker are seen in the major parts. They are joined by Hayley Atwell who is perfect for the role of Ellie.

This film will appeal to audiences of a certain age who will appreciate the nuances in the story and will certainly enjoy the magnificent cast chosen to bring it to life.

Never has there been a film like this.

By far the weirdest movie I have ever seen. When M dot Strange was told to think outside the box, he overshot a little. He stepped out of the box, and punted it into the sea. At the screening at Sundance, M dot Strange said that he pretty much locked himself in his room with a bunch of broken toys, and nine computers. He stayed there for more than a year with only his frighteningly twisted imagination, and came out with this animation that is a mix between Stop-motion, Computer animation, 8 bit video game animation, and Japanese Anime. He calls it "Str8nime". The visuals are absolutely stunning. An electric-techno roller-coaster of a movie, with a soundtrack equally colorful. The imagination of M dot Strange is truly dark and wild.

enjoy, and hide your soul, because this film might try to take it.

One of the best horror films I've seen in a long, long time

On first impressions The Mist doesn't remotely seem like the kind of film anyone should be excited about. The Mist, what? A bit like The Fog, then. Stephen King's The Mist, oh, that makes it even worse. Directed by Frank Darabont, since when did he direct horror films? Okay, so he scripted Nightmare on Elm Street 3 and The Blob, not bad films, but not classics in any sense. Starring Thomas Jane, has anyone seen The Punisher. And, to cap it all, The Mist died a quick death at the US box office. It'll probably go straight to DVD in the UK.

The only reason I bought and watched the film was on a recommendation from a friend. He pleaded: "You have to see this film. You won't believe how good it is." So I put his judgement to the test.

And thank God. This is a great horror film. From the opening scene, Darabont sets a tone that's creepy, sinister and beautifully judged. The script is realistic, the character are believable and the direction... Darabont has almost reinvented himself. The Mist is dark, scary and even funny (intentionally). You care about the characters, the scary scenes are scary, and the whole film is carried off with an efficiency, a lack of pretension and a strong idea of what makes a good, if not great, horror film.

And the ending... how dark can you get? I can understand why this didn't do well at the box office. But neither did Shawshank Redemption...

Uh oh.

Director Kelvin Tong had said that Men in White was made in a way that would appeal to young people. I'm sad to say that he's quite off the mark.

The film's plot is already weak to begin with, and to make things worse, it becomes more and more obscure towards the end. We're not looking for an Academy-award winner here, but how are we supposed to watch a movie when there is no storyline to follow? The entire movie just tossed five ghosts together, and that's it, we get to see them 'live' their 'dead lifestyles'.

Tong tries to recreate the 'Mo-Lei-Tau' impression here, a 'pseudo genre' of HK comedy movies made famous by the great Stephen Chow. However, he's missing all the key ingredients here; none of the actors are close to being as energetic and charismatic as Chow, and most of the gags are unoriginal and continuously reused within the film. I felt like walking out of the theater whenever the rap segments came on.

I've heard Tong's The Maid was quite a good film, but he really needs to stay off comedies. From mo lei tau, at least.

Awful, awful, awful...

I have no words to explain what disastrous movie I saw last night, no humor, no entertainment, very bad performances, really IT'S ONE OF THE WORST MOVIES I EVER SEEN. I don't understand what were the director thinking when he was making the jokes, that's no funny, for god's sake! people are fed up about fighting families that trying to copy "Married with children", the hard wife, the silly husband, and the bad kids...please, come on!

I had seen some Spanish works and they were pretty good, but, this one could be the anti-humor movie ever made. Please don't waste both your money and your time with this piece of garbage, better, go to see Date Movie again. This should be the tag-line: "You will laugh...of sadness".

A treacly, obvious melodrama

Tengoku wa matte kureru ("Heaven can wait. Maybe...") is a painfully labored melodrama about three school friends whose youthful friendship turns into a strained love-triangle. The three characters are little more than types: the smart, quiet boy; the slow but determined blue-collar worker; and the object of both of their affections, the professional store clerk who can't choose between her two best friends.

The big plot twist, such as it is, is surprisingly tame, and it's lack of suspense leaves the subsequent events without tension. Much of the film is filled with repetitive camera shots of a fish market, hospital room, and the insertion of vapid pop songs, leaving little room for plot or character development, and what story there is, is predictable and bland.

With a script and acting that seems more suited to daytime soap operas than a feature film, and sugary music that dripped with pathos, I found it hard to muster much sympathy or interest for any of the characters.

A Nutshell Review: Happy Birthday (Sun Yat Fai Lok)

It's difficult to sit through this movie, at least for me. Identifying with certain elements brought back some memories that I try to keep at the back of my mind, and going into this movie with slight expectations of the storyline reminded me of what a friends once said, that I'm a sucker for punishment. And yes, this movie dragged a bit, and moves along in cruise control, until the final act where it sledgehammers emotions all the way to an expected cliché ending.

But it is the emotions and thoughts of modern day relationships that makes this movie quite depressing. Based on a short story written by actress Rene Liu herself, and adapted for the big screen by renowned actress/director Sylvia Chang, Happy Birthday, stripped bear of its emotions, is actually a vanilla plain love story which is done ad nauseam. It is the little nuances of the things people do, or do not, that rings the story home.

Rene plays Mi, a girl who wears a smile on her face, but deep inside hides this grave insecurity. Louis Koo, more famous last year for his Johnny To triad outings and possibly treading the same path in the upcoming Derek Yee movie Protégé, stars as Rene's lover Nam, a boy who seems to be commitment phobic, the stud to whom the chicks flock to. Put them both together, and with their obvious personality differences, you'll come to expect a very rocky road ahead. But isn't love all about taking that initial leap of faith?

Watching the two get together, then not, and then some, makes it frustrating. But I felt herein lies probably some realism, at least for me in my limited experiences, of two people trying to get together, yet prevented from doing do because of self doubt, or the lack of courage to admit your feelings. Walls get built up, and both decided to be better than best friends, because then, nobody will get heartbroken if things do not work out. What gives? It's back to the games people play.

I find it easy to identify surprisingly with both characters. The fear I can feel, and the folly of deciding to wait I've done, or perhaps still doing? And in my defenses I've set out to tell myself never to experience the type of heart sinking moments Mi felt when she learnt of good tidings from Nam. There will always remain a sense of curiosity, of wanting to maintain contact with your ex, or wanting to find out a bit more, but it's my take (some may disagree) to cut off ties completely (ok, so sometimes I waver), lest we hurt or become hurt.

It's tempting to dispense with the advice of telling someone you love them in case it becomes too late, especially after watching the movie and agreeing that holding back is one of the worst ways of handling relationships, but it's always easier to say than to do. You might be tempted to go forth and say it, however it's real life, and reality doesn't last just 1 hour and 45 minutes. I'm probably two minds about it though, with the counter argument being if you don't, you might spend equal time reminiscing on regret.

Rene Liu and Louis Koo look like the model couple, and it's pretty hard to know that the former, with her pixie looking facial features, is actually already 37 years old. And both leads actually belt out some tunes for the movie, albeit some deliberately off key. The look of the film takes on an incredible soft focus feel from start to end, and that, while romantic and dreamy during certain scenes, will take a bit of time to get used to. Veteran Richard Ng also stars in the movie, as Mi's dad, and the supporting cast of Bowie Tsang, Lawrence Chou, and a host of others helped to lift the movie from its gloom.

Happy Birthday might not be everyone's cup of tea given the style of delivery of its standard- story-with-clichéd-ending, but I guess if you open up your heart to it, you might find it a tad more enjoyable, and somehow, if you're that sentimental fool who's been there and done that, you'll feel that tinge of regret inside you.

Confusing and contrived

If you plan to watch this film, bring an ample bucket of patience along with your popcorn. Within 15 minutes, this flick descends into murky and contrived situations that will leave your head spinning. You are watching two parallel films (one in the present, one in flashbacks 32 years earlier), but you're also watching perhaps two or three OTHER sub-plotted films, with shady and brutal characters weaving in and out, some appearing or reappearing or just disappearing altogether.

The 'plot' for this flick is so contrived that, as a mere mortal, I'm at a loss to explain it. As an act of symbolism (what happens to children snatched from birth), it works, at least on one level.

Guillaume Cantet plays Eric, the son of a father he never knew (he was abandoned at birth). He receives an urn containing the ashes of his father from (what else?) a mysterious source who (what else?) REMAINS mysterious. We presume the urn really contained not ashes, but drugs, coveted by nasty druglords who come from somewhere (Marseilles? Paris? Who knows?) As with so much in this film, these shadowy druglords are enigmatic figures used as 'add-ons' when we already have too many 'add-ons'.

A barely recognizable Thierry Lhermitte plays a man who needs some kind of brain 'graft' if he wishes to survive. Such a 'graft' can only come from his daughter, who may, or may not be, Cecile (Vanessa Paradis), a cheap roadside hooker who manages to be kidnapped by the druglords, hidden in a cellar, and escapes through an odd, and, yes, confusing twist of events.

I kept rewinding this film, trying to really understand it. No such luck. The 'clef' (key) of the title re-emerges in the end, in yet another peculiar twist that isn't really explored. And that pretty well sums up this flick for me: a lot of tantalizing 'twists'.

The terrific Josie Balasko plays Michele, a dogged and philosophical detective in the 1970s who believes in 'parallel universes' -- intimate events affecting people connected in different places and time. The great Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski explored this theme on numerous occasions, most successfully perhaps in 'The Double Life of Veronique'. This 'parallel' theme is really what this film is supposed to be about, it seems to me, but it just doesn't work.

Marie Gillain plays Eric's long-suffering wife Audrey. Unfortunately, she doesn't have much to do in this film.

This should have been a superlative thriller, but it couldn't find a cohesive thread to compound the suspense. It has a lot of style with jolt-a-minute editing and often irritating (and disruptive) hand-held camera work. In short: as so often happens in movies such as La Clef, style supersedes substance.

This movie is based upon a real story.

I generally don't like this kind of movie: based on a true story. Because you get a misled view of a real event. The *reality* is often an excuse for a film to be weak.

Here, these rules are not broken.

The story is about the "gang des postiches"; its rise and fall. Gangster d'amour style.

The movie is oddly long for a french one: 2hrs. Oddly paced also: After a couple of bank burglaries, scenes move from one point to another without any warning, save for flashbacks which are B&W. Elusions are also used to a point where it s a bit confusing.

It is funny however to see the media coverage of the gang's activities: they are really from the real life newspapers and TV news. And they tend to be pro-gangsters. It seems so weird in those post 2k1 years.

Also, is enjoyable how the little mystery at the end of the movie is explainable with knowledge of real life french criminal news from 2k4

An IRAQI's Comment (Who witnessed the war)

I would give this movie 10 stars for the courage that the producers had shown to reveal the truth about was going on there in Iraq.

First of all I am an Iraqi who witnessed everything that happened since the first moment the war took place. I am not an American who is in favour of certain political wing or party. And it is really frustrating to hear those voices picking holes in De Palma's movie and accusing him of being biased or not knowing how the army operates or..or ..or ..etc. You don't need to know anything to be human!! and to stop killing, supporting, or covering for the killing of the innocents.

It is not about elections and politics!! it is about hundreds of people getting killed daily by different groups whether Al-Qaeda, the militias, death squads, or the coalition forces themselves!! The movie was so touching in every single aspect for an Iraqi who had lived there and witnessed the war. The combination of bad and good soldiers is so true. And choosing Sammara rather than any other province or city was so wise since the pressure and threat that the soldiers are under there is not the same for soldiers who are in rather safer areas like the Northern part of Iraq. Also the psychological pressure that most of those soldiers are under has been made clear in this movie; as well as, the negativity, hostility and racism of some soldiers..If you are an Iraqi who understands English, you can understand what the American soldiers mumble or yell about every time an Iraqi approaches them. You can tell from the look whether that soldier is a good or a bad one. Something that has been successfully shown and well presented in that movie.

Like most of the people who support the American army there and consider every Iraqi or Muslim a terrorist or "desert nig**r" or "rag head", most of the Iraqis and Muslims consider every troop a thief, raper, and occupier who is after money, oil and damaging or destroying Islam. But does that mean that they are right? they are both wrong!! All the movie did is that it put the reality of what is going on in Iraq in to cinema cause not all people follow the news or know which media to be trusted; moreover, it didn't say that those stories or characters are true or ever existed. And you don't need De Palma or the Fox news to tell you that!! May be it is true that they might not know a lot about Iraq, but what makes you think that you know better than them about Iraq??!!..

Another true and clever thing about the movie were the videos posted on the internet whether for the insurgents, soldiers' wives, or the people who oppose such disgraceful crimes. Also how, in the end, the innocent soldiers were the ones who pay for the crimes that their teammates commit whether physically (Salazar) or psychologically (McCoy).

Sweet children's film

Also known as "Where Is Winky's Horse?" this sequel to "Het Paard van Sinterklaas" follows up on the story of the first film. Winky is allowed to groom the horse of Sinterklaas (Saint Nicholas, who celebrates his birthday on December 5th by giving children presents, more or less known as Santa Claus in other countries). She does it with a lot of love and is quite happy with the task. When her parents tell her she'll be getting horse riding lessons for her next birthday she's thrilled and assuming it'll be on that specific horse. As events roll by the title of the film is explained - the horse disappears and trouble arises.

As a typical children's film about moral, good and bad, confessing mistakes and such this one is not a film to bring many surprised looks on the faces of the audience. Kids that liked the first one will like this sequel, and parents that get dragged along will not be completely bored for it is actually worked out pretty well. The acting of the kid that plays Winky is done well enough to make the character feel completely believable and the other events happening are in place far enough to be accepted too.

The overall sequence of the film feels much like the old style Disney films where things start good, get bad and end good, but that isn't bad. It feels good and works well on the targeted audience - kids in the age group of 4 to 8 years.

Nice enough, 7 out of 10 horses groomed

Review :

An ode to Old school

In the nutshell the movie pays tribute to the original super-hit "Yamagola" and blends in a few tried-and-test sub-plots (read that as 1980's formula loaded with cinematic liberties). Nonetheless, it is an interesting watch and delivers good laughs.

Jr. NTR:: Performance wise, strictly OK considering the fact that "original" NTRs blood runs in his veins. And yes, his dancing skills deserve special mention - very supple & fluid.

Mohan Babu:: Initially, you search for Satyanarayana in the character but as you go along the tide you feel his performance is equally impressive, if not better.

Priyamani:: Manages to effective evoke the sympathy of the audience with her "miss-goody-two-shoes" performance and her soft expressions. You are glued to her until Mamta Mohandas appears on the screen.

Mamta Mohandas:: Now she is one heavy-weight if I might use the expression for every time she appears in the frame she sets it ablaze. Bessotted - completely!

Khusboo:: No meat in the character.

Naresh:: Good to see after a long hiatus and well suited for the role of Narada.

Rest of the star cast is adequate.

The art department and the CGI deserves nothing short of standing ovation. And same should be said for the concept of resurrecting the "orignal NTR". Needless to say, very clever and indeed innovative considering the fact its great to see the duo share the screen space.
