An Abstract

Upon first glance, this may seem like Mizoguchi re-hashing the themes and methods from his more successful films. And a lot seems to be read into the fact of this being his last film and, consequently, it somehow has to stand as a "swan song" or a culmination of his work. But it must be recognised that, form what I can tell, it was never meant to be so. This isn't like Kurosawa's "Madadayo" or Bergman's "Fanny and Alexander," but rather a more specific look at something he had always incorporated (the role of women in Japanese society) but had never attacked as specifically and focused as here. His famous female characters were appropriate vessels for his universal humanism, and he used their plights to make some of the more moving films of his era. But there is little universal going on in this film, it is a direct and poignant attack on a lack of change in a progressive area. The characters misfortunes all reinforce this ethical treatment, as opposed to examining any intrinsic leanings in the human soul. The film is more interesting than truly moving, and you won't see the emotional superlatives that are heaped on his other masterpieces. Still, it is an important film and it would have been interesting to see in which direction he would have gone after this.

Not Bad: Mostly For Young Adults

This film is based on a manga I haven't seen, but it is still a pretty good, special effects laden, imaginative film. Ostensibly about finding and returning an evil stone that was taken by a young boy's father, who in turn is chased with his high school age sister by an array of interesting, not of this world characters, this film takes you to a lot of places. The good versus evil theme is, of course, prevalent throughout, and the film is recommended more for children from about 10 to 17. The film has flaws, the film is far from perfect, but I think it will keep children entertained without scaring them out of their wits. In that sense, the film is successful.

Great 1950s Subversive Cinema!

This film, much like the melodramas of Douglas Sirk, has far more going on than meets the eye. James Mason's character, after getting whacked out of Cortizone (a "Miracle Drug") indeed becomes hysterical and abusive. But he was made ill in the first place by the strain caused his intensely driven lifestyle, where he kept two jobs to finance his family's social and financial ascent.

What the viewer has to watch for is what his character says during his cortizone-induced delusions. His criticisms of his wife, kid, PTA and society in general are over-the-top, but essentially valid. It's a classic narrative device: by allowing a main character a way out of societal responsibility and place (In this case, being bombed on Cortizone), he is allowed to comment on and criticize American society directly without actually threatening the status quo. and in the case of 1950s America, that's a monolithic status quo to criticize.

The Mystery Is How They Could String It Out For Two Hours

This film can be summed up as follows: sumptuous photography; turgid plot; wooden acting.

The mystery is how they could string it out for two hours. The story is that there isn't a story - it's just a travelogue across the Libyan desert. Michael Craig, who was hot property in British cinema back then, is a blacked-up Arab sheik and has no lines that I can remember. Blink and you miss him. I just couldn't work out what Anthony Steele would see in the love interest. Donald Sinden looks as though he has the mood of someone who has got out of bed the wrong side every morning of the shoot.

The only thing that must have stopped this from bombing at the box office was the novelty for the cinema-going public in grey, smog-ridden 1950s Britain of seeing 'real', 'desert' sand in colour, something they could have done on the sea front at Clacton or Bournemouth.

The right people make the law.

Classic western. A marshal(Randolph Scott)finds himself tired of taming the beast. A hired gunman(Michael Pate)is hired by businessmen(Warner Anderson and John Emery)to "take care of" the lawman so corruption can run the town. Plenty of action and strong supporting cast featuring: Jean Parker, Don Megowan, Wallace Ford and Angela Lansbury as the winsome showgirl. Pate as the gloved gunman practically steals the show. The stoic Scott proves why he has top billing.

Good enough to be worth your while, probably not to own.

The movie had a few things going in its favor. For one, it used reasonable technology and background, so the story wasn't far-fetched. Secondly, and most importantly in my eyes, it did NOT go for shock value. It didn't try to use gore to elicit a reaction from the crowd. Not to say that some scenes weren't rough on the eyes, but it was far from a Saw or Hostel. Thirdly, it honestly kept me on the edge of my seat for a good portion of the movie. And lastly, the ending does not drag itself out. It ends at the logical point.

That having been said, this movie will not change your life. It's a little bit of a commentary on society, but moreso, it's just an entertaining movie to watch.

Not worth 94mins of my life

I borrowed the DVD and looked at the cover. Hmmm. It looked good. A low angle shot of Igor, the hero. The tag line was what caught me. The "No Budget" bit to be exact. So I sat down and watched the whole 94mins of it with my sibling. I was quite disappointed. The storyline made no sense and there was no character development. I wish I hadn't seen it. Waste of my time.

But don't get me wrong. It's not that it sucked. It was just quite tedious. The stunts were impressive and then got a bit excessive.

I give it 1 out of 10.

But don't let my review put you off. YOU watch it and YOU be the judge.

Review :

good message without being preachy...

It is a rare film that teaches about the importance of forgiveness without being preachy. Yet this film manages to do just that. Perhaps it is because the film doesn't actually teach forgiveness, but rather shows what the character in question actually lived through and left the audience to decide for themselves which side of the fence they would fall on.

And so kudos have to go to the actors for such an able portrayal of what their characters lived through and are living through in the film. Credit goes most especially to the actress (Lee Na-Young) who did a fine job of showing how her character journeyed to be able to reach the kind of person she becomes at the end of the film; the male lead was quite good himself.

Good acting, well articulated plot, music was good - overall: recommended.

Has Potential of Cult-Movie

While visiting his friend Billy (Dov Tiefenbach) in the rehabilitation of a local psychiatric hospital, the arts student Danny Sloan (Dylan Purcell) decides to see the serial killer Byron Volpe (Patrick Kilpatrick), who is a deranged hypnotizer that used his ability to control his victims and keeps saying "tick tick" that is arrested wearing a hood to cover his eyes, in a cell in the end of the corridor. When he passes by the room of Laura Baxter (Cherilyn Wilson), he becomes fascinated with her angelical beauty and discovers that she has Parasomnia or the Sleeping Beauty syndrome, sleeping most of the time and awaking briefly on a few moments only. Billy visits the girl in other occasions falling in love with her; when he finds that she will be transferred to serve as experiment in a clinic with bad reputation, he decides to abduct Laura and bring her to his apartment. However, Byron also loves Laura and controls her nightmares, and uses his power to bring her back to him in a trail of blood.

First of all, the weird "Parasomnia" definitely has potential of cult-movie. The absurd and odd story begins like a romantic tale (I believed it would be an update of Sleeping Beauty), introducing the gorgeous and lovely Cherilyn Wilson (her breasts are perfect); shifts to horror, supported by a magnificently bizarre cinematography that recalls in some moments Guillermo Del Toro's "El Laberinto del Fauno"; a cameo of Sean Young and John Landis; the cult Jeffrey Combs in the role of Detective Garrett; and a creepy and evil villain, performed by Patrick Kilpatrick. The overture of "Romeo and Juliet" is used in one of the most bizarre, disturbing and imaginative scenes I have ever seen in a horror movie. Last but not the least, there are lots of gore to satisfy the fans. My vote is seven.

Classic - please do not remake

A minor automobile accident on the eve of New Years, makes Mané (Silvia Pinal), a beautiful girl who was running away after a fight with her fiancée, met Cutberto (Pedro Infante), a mechanic. He can not fix her car and takes her instead to her parents house in Cuernavaca. Once there, after the small talk during the trip, they start drinking and one thing leads to another, so they end up falling asleep in each other's arms. The following day, when her parents arrive, find them together and think the worse of them.

But Mané and Cutberto didn't do anything. Mané's father (Óscar Ortíz de Pinedo) understands perfectly, buy his wife (Doña Sara García) doesn't allow anybody to clarify and decides they will have to marry. Of course the marriage will be dissolved as soon as possible, they will do this to save her reputation.

What nobody expects is that between Mané and Cutberto a little spark changes everything, they fall in love, but with her parents around, things get bad and they end up fighting and thinking they hate each other. Only him can save that relationship... but, is he ready? She's been a little hurtful...

Pedro Infante proves one more time that besides a great singer and actor, he was also a great comedian. Watch ESCUELA DE VAGABUNDOS, and if you watch ROMEO CONTRA JULIETA, do it on your own risk...

Great combination of comedy and pathos

The thesis of the film seems to be that, though opposites may not attract, two individuals with real but complementary needs can make their way toward a fulfilling relationship. As Beau tells Cheri at the end: If I have no experience with love and you have too much, maybe we can meet somewhere in the middle. The viewer is intended to feel humor toward and sympathy for both the cowboy and the saloon singer; and I at least do, even after having seen the movie 7 or 8 times. The cast is uniformly excellent. As often noted, Monroe has never been better in subtly conveying a range of emotions. It is difficult to avoid comparing Cheri's history and needs with her own pursuit of success as an actress. Murray is hilarious as the naive cowboy in the first sequences, until the unattractive side of his innocence appears and must be subdued before the finale. For an old timer like myself, it was great to see Betty Field playing against the fragile character she created in a few films from the 40s.

Golden vein

I didn't recognize Terence Hill (here credited as Mario Girotti ,his real name,like in "Cartagine in Flamme ";it was to last till 1967);I must say his movies with Bud Spencer and co are not my cup of tea anyway.When he made "La Vena D'Ora " he was sixteen ,and it is much to Bolognini's credit ,for teenagers are generally played by actors in their twenties (see "Rebel without a cause" ).

Long before Louis Malle and his "Soufflé Au Coeur" ,with more elegance,Bolognini depicts an oedipal relationship between a mother and her only son.Not only he is still in love with her ,but she is too,and she looks so young (she is a widow) they seem like a pair of lovers.

When the movie begins ,both seem to live in a luxury mausoleum ,where only women are to be found:an old servant,an aging aristocrat who believes she's still attractive ,a rather bland young girl ...there's about as much life as in the archaeological site of professor Baseheart.

The boy invites the professor for dinner and the forty-something soon becomes a rival,more than he can endures.The center of the movie is a ball during which the boy's resentment against him knows no more bounds.

Bolognini's movies are always a delight to watch ,even if the ending of this one is a bit disappointing:the pictures in black and white are magnificent.

Bolognini was certainly ,along with Comencini,the most underrated of Italian directors.
