Good Gangster Film

I originally saw the film when it came out and only saw it again recently. Scenes from the film have stayed with me and I wasn't disappointed when it ran on TV. John Payne, The Boss, was a good Hollywood portrayal of a crime boss. The bad guys are really bad and the good guys are few. Crooked politics, payoffs, rub-outs, double-crosses, brawls, you name it and it's used. Payne was a popular actor in the 40's but I didn't appreciate him at the time. Based on this film I will try to see some of his others. If you liked Asphalt Jungle you probably would also like The Boss.

"In case you don't know what 'cortisan' means, it's just a fancy word for 'tramp'!"

Woman in her late-twenties, twice married and twice divorced, leaves behind New York City for her small hometown, moving back in with her eternally-disappointed mother; immediately upon her arrival, she starts getting marriage proposals...unfortunately, the man she chooses to be Husband No. #3 is a mamma's boy. Glossy, fairly enjoyable soaper from the play by Samson Raphaelson, although we never quite get a grip on Jean Simmons' Hilda Crane, who is alternately haughty, overwrought, idealistic yet aloof (she wants her happily-ever-after, though she needs to be supported financially as well). Hilda's taste in men seems to be her biggest hurdle--perhaps in place of the tall, thin, men's catalogue type, she should try for one of the construction workers over at her fiancé's job site? And I'm not saying this for my health...

I'm new to New York and my girlfriend and I really enjoy doing "NYC things" every once in a while. So... we went to a Yankee game in September, the MET in October, the Thanksgiving Day Parade in November, ice skating at Rockefeller Center in December and a film festival last month. Every activity more fun than the next... However, I'm a movie kind of guy and really enjoyed the film festival the best. A movie called "You Tell Me" was the feature we enjoyed the most. I'm sure I missed some of the film because I was busy laughing over a lot of the dialogue. I remember thinking that this movie that I had never heard of is funnier than most of the big studio flicks they mass produce and make hundreds of millions of dollars out these days. My girlfriend and I also liked it because one of the characters in the film was just like a friend of ours, so weird. So, if you like romantic comedies, movies in general or just want to do a "NYC thing", go see "You Tell Me"... and I'm not saying this for my health.

Comedic Dischord in The Full Picture

The Full Picture was really a fun flick. The cast was terrific and director Jon Bowden's script really sharp. The ongoing dysfunctional relationships are ones we can all relate to and the interactions between brothers Hal and Mark Foster were completely believable. Kudos to Mssrs. Hutchinson and Jennings.

Bettina Devin is absolutely wonderful as Gretchen Foster - imperious, haughty, and comedic. Lizzie Ross does a masterful job in conveying the emotional complexities of the anxiety attack ridden Erika. The film at times leaves you feeling very uncomfortable, that is until the family tensions begin to get embarrassingly out of control. The scene in the Japanese restaurant is priceless.

The film score was exceptional and helped create additional tension in the flick. Really well done!!

Well worth watching

Despie my interest in post war films and all things Naval, I have not heard of this film. How I have missed it is beyond me.

George Baker is fantastic as the lead and Bill Owen, known to me as Compo, is a revelation. Richard Attenborough is perfect as always and the roles played by Bernard Lee and Virginia McKenna are small but superb.

I must now read the book to see how the author handled the many strands and ending, which is a little disappointing in the film. Few people in today's Britain understand the stress and strain on on those demobbed at the end of WW2 but I suspect that with growing redundancies of front line troops in Afghanistan, the stories and threads explored in this film will strike a modern chord.

Charles Chaplin would have loved this

Terribly dull comedy/drama about Teddy, 'the greatest clown ever' who lost the will to perform after the accidental death of his son (and clown partner). Now he runs a Joke shop, but when his landlady's foster child Ulli kicks his window in, the old performer starts to liven up. Teddy even starts to learn the boy some of his old routines. Unfortunately, Ulli's mother is about to remarry in New York (they always had to have some sort of American connection) and calls for him to be send over. The old clown misunderstands, packs up Ulli and his dog and heads for Switzerland. Once there, they immediately start plastering home made posters on the walls, as if they had this planned all along.

Brief side note. I simply must mention a totally out of place reverse shot that is inserted at the swimming resort: divers are shown catapulting out of the water onto the diving board. At first I thought something was wrong with my video, but using my own rewind button, it turned out they added this on purpose for a cheap laugh. Since this kind of thing normally only happens in Kung Fu fantasies, it makes little sense in an overly sentimental film like this. I mean, who needs a clown act when you can break the laws of gravity?

Finally we get to see the act, once again called Teddy und Teddy (apparently old Teddy has shaken of any nasty memories). As this was supposed to be the funniest clowns act ever, our expectations are high. It turns out to consist mainly of moving suitcases and stuff (quite impressive seeing as they have no accomplices), while both the Teddy's are playing instruments. Apparently Ulli learned all this while driving from Germany to Switzerland. But the sister of his mothers fiancée is on Ulli's trail. When she finds them, the woman decides to follow them a while longer, probably so their parting will have an even greater impact near the end. Unfortunately for us, this means more shots of them driving around town.

Actor Heinz Ruhmann (the original Teddy) was incredibly popular with German audiences at this time and if you can make it all the way through, you do realize why. His performance as the sad clown can hardly be faulted. Still, unless you're going through a depression of your own, you will have a hard time sitting this one out.

Extremely Moving Film

Forget what you've heard before about what this story is about. This story is about a love that is doomed in every respect, but even so is still so deep that it can not be denied.

This movie tested my patience. At certain points the movement on screen was so slow that I started to think there was something wrong with the disc player I was using. I am not a fan of 'artsy' films. I do not usually shed tears during 'emotional moments' in movies. I am not familiar with the other incarnations of this story in Japanese comic or animation form so I am judging it based only on what I saw in this film.

The ending got under my skin and made me shed tears. Due to a painfully beautiful ending I can not give this movie higher praises. Upon a 2nd viewing all the almost unbearable slowness makes sense and is actually appreciated! The acting once thought hollow now seems only reserved emotions. I found the movie to be a true experience.

I recommend that if you can bare the initial slowness to give this movie a chance and hopefully you will come away with a deeper understanding of what love is and can be. Ironically, this was an extremely moving film with the least amount of actual movement I have seen in a very long time. I am personally very thankful to have seen this film.

100% worth seeing

I just saw "Desierto Sur" at the Heidelberg-Mannheim international Filmfestival. This is an amazing movie probably only a newcomer's director can do... lively, honest and straight from the heart. The plot is set in the marvelous landscape of Chile- this awesome scenery no studio ever can mimic. This makes this road movie even more special. Sofias trip through the desert is not only a trip through Chile finding her mother's love and, possibly, her father. It's also a journey finding herself and getting in touch with what really counts in life… The open ending let us guess if her mothers destiny is going to repeat for Sofia and Gustavo. Hope some more Shawn Gerry movies will find the way from Chile to European cinemas!

OK movie till climax

Another trying to be different movie from Anant, his past were good but this one below the expectation. The movie is about a Mumbai girl (Minisha Lamba) who marries to rich guy from Rajasthan, Vikram (Dino). Vikram a widower whose first wife disappears mysteriously, takes his newly wedded wife ti Gajner and from there her quest to know about Anamika (first wife of Vikram) starts and leads to a hopeless end. Movie gets some speed but the looks like director was confused about how to end the movie. Due to small character list, you will easily predict the killer among suspect. Strongest point of the movie is Rajasthan, else its below avg movie in most of the department, including music. Anu Malik should retire now. Watch it, if you want to spend some time with OK kind of movie. Though I am usually kind in rating but my 5* to this movie.

Thought I would be supporting Melbourne film-making...

I thought that by spending 30 dollars on a locally made film, I would be supporting the Australian Film Industry - but if films from Melbourne are all like this - I'll never buy another. In fact, I don't think I will ever buy a locally made film... such a shame. This film has shaken all my faith in Melbourne. Shaken my faith in film in general. My eyes weep. My heart bleeds. It hurt so bad.

It's as if the director started with the intention of going through every single film filter in history. I think this film would have been not bad if not for the ludicrous pretentious use of stock AVID and Premier filters littered, with no real reason, throughout the film. The writing isn't horrible, the make up is quite good (as far as B grade horror goes) and the story is interesting enough - but beside all that Hard work, the director literally pulled down his pants and defecated all over the canvas with the filters, colors, bad computer generated effects, bad day for night shoots and editing, annoying monochrome -for-no-reason, etc etc etc. It's like watching somebody back when VHS video camcorders were released playing around with all the transition settings. I'm a fan of all film for the main part - from B grade and Z grade 60's and 70's exploitation horror all the way to Oscar fodder, and there was nothing in this that I can say I enjoyed. Nothing. It is a great film to watch if you want to see what not to do if you're a filmmaker, but only if somebody pays you to take a copy of the film.

I feel very sorry for the actors, who after 3 years of production, had to sit through this film at the premier and see there performances mangled under a pile of bad transitions, annoying over the top filters etc. It is such a shame.

And the fact that this won an award locally just goes to show how bad our industry is. I would usually never go out of the way to derail a film, but whoever wrote the last review was an inside man, and that's just cheating.

Evangelion: Rebuilt!

I was lucky enough to buy tickets to the opening day of Rebuild of Evangelion 0:1. After waiting in line from 5:30am, wearing custom printed Evangelion shirt, I was able to get front row seats to the first screening... and it was worth the wait! The classic epic story is retold with amazing new animation, new sound effects, new music and new scenes. Gainax has refreshed a timeless classic without taking the magic away from the original series. I doubt any fan of Evangelion would be disappointed - besides the fact we waited 12 years to witness Evangelion as indeed by Hideaki Anno.

Rebuild of Evangelion 0:1 is how it was meant to be if the creators had the technology 12 years ago. If you've watched the TV anime to death or you are new to Evangelion, either way, Rebuild of Evangelion is for all fans of the anime.

For those of you who don't know, Rebuild of Evangelion 0:1 is part one of an upcoming series of four movies. With the fourth film being a new conclusion to the original story. Compared to the original anime series and movies, besides being more enjoyable, these films are easier to follow for new fans of the series.

Despite authentic locales, Disney film could use more Hispanic flavor!

Friendly family movie from Walt Disney, filmed entirely on-location in Mexico with a largely Mexican cast and crew, concerns runaway boy and his love for the mistreated horse he has taken with him. Directed by the estimable Roberto Gavaldón, later the filmmaker behind the 1960 cult film "Macario", who was potentially a terrific match for this material. Still, though the movie has its heart in the right place, the Hispanic text has been smoothed over for American audiences, resulting in a coy, somewhat stilted slice of white bread. Andrés Velázquez is pretty good as ten-year old Pablito, and the horse is handled well, yet the film never really generated much excitement (with Disney fans or otherwise). **1/2 from ****
