A moving experience

I saw this movie tonight at the Reel World Film Festival in Toronto, expecting another one of those immigrant culture clash cultural pieces in line with the Bollywood-Hollywood/Bhaji on the Beach types that contain poorly developed characters, bad acting, loud political messages and contrived and simplistic plot lines. The fact that it was helmed by a first time director with no previous film experience did not help me in formulating my preconception. Boy was I wrong! Ocean of Pearls is a moving and ultimately redeeming spiritual voyage that intelligently touched upon such topics as faith, assimilation, materialism, family and HMOs in modern secular America, while telling the story of a young Sikh-Canadian doctor who loses his faith in his religion and profession when taking on new job at a private Detroit hospital. Its not as profound (or heady) as an Ingmar Bergman film (and is not intended to be), but for a family drama it carries great weight and is a refreshingly honest portrayal of South Asians in North America.

The sounds

As the story begins, we are taken to Viena and Daniel's home. It is obvious from the moment we hear their conversation the couple is in trouble. What is more puzzling is the person who is in another part of the loft recording their conversation. We wonder, what's going on here? Are Viena and Daniel acting for a picture, withing the film, or what gives? As it turns out, the recording "engineer" is none other than Lucas, their son, a young man who gets his kicks by eavesdropping to conversations all around him.

Viena, a successful theater director, is staging a two character Chekhov play done in an unusual setting. She is having problems with the actress who cannot remember her lines. Daniel, a geriatric doctor in charge of a nursing home, appears to resent his wife's profession, her late hours, as he feels she is pulling away from him. Then, there is Eva, the taciturn nurse at the clinic who has an unusual way of taking care of her patients.

Silvia Munt, an actress, is trying her hand at directing. She also co-wrote the screenplay with Eva Baeza. The result is a film in which there is hardly any affection, much less love, among the characters that populate that rarefied world. It is as though communication does not exist for these doomed people. Ms. Munt's film has that European feeling where angst and gloom play a big part in the story. There mood is somber with a lack of humor among the people that populate the world depicted.

Ms. Munt, who plays Viena, is a good actress, who perhaps should have left the directing job to someone else, concentrating on the woman she is supposed to be in the story. Her Viena is a woman whose life is going away from her without her recognizing it. Daniel is played by Ramon Madaula who perhaps fare better because it is clear he is still in love with the woman he married, although he doesn't know how to solve the situation. Laia Marull appears as Eva, a time bomb waiting to explode. Ms. Marull does a wonderful portrayal of the confused soul that has not found love in her life. The great Manuel Alexandre is seen as one of the patients in the nursing home.

Technically, "Pretextos" has a great look thanks to its cinematographer, David Omedes, who favors the dark colors that go hand in hand with what is going on in the movie. Eduardo Arbide's music is easy on the ear. One could only wish Silvia Munt good luck in future endeavors.

A joyous musical, one not to be missed

I'm amazed that there are no comments on this movie, which is one of the best musicals I have ever seen in a lifetime of watching a lot of movie musicals.

It is a film version of the stage show Le Chanteur de Mexico, which was one of the great hits of the French musical theater in the years immediately after WWII. I haven't seen the stage version, so I can't speak to how closely the movie follows it. I can say, however, that the movie shows the influence of the 1950s Technicolor musicals that Hollywood was making in an effort to lure new television buyers away from their sets and back into movie theaters, which they had deserted. In addition, you can see the influence of some earlier French movie musicals, like Le Marriage de Ramuntcho (1946), the first French full-color feature-length film, which also made use of Basque local color.

Indeed, local color is big in this movie, as it was in the travelogues that also filled theaters in the US and France in the 1950s, something else that television couldn't yet offer. The movie starts off with scenes in the Basque region (that very much recall similar scenes in the Marriage of Ramuntcho), then moves on to Paris with views from high up on the Eiffel Tower, carriage rides through the streets of the city, etc., that recall Gigi. Then we're off to Mexico, with lots of scenes of festivals and more local color, Alcapulco, etc.

In the end, however, what counts here is not the Eastmancolor or the glimpses of the world American tourists were just starting to discover. It's the music, which is wonderful and very memorable, and the performances.

The star is the tenor, Luis Moriano, who was sort of a French equivalent of Mario Lanza. He had a powerful, beautiful voice, capable of very impressive high notes (and a better technique for handling soft passages and fioritura; he had actually sung opera in the theater and studied it seriously). He wasn't a great actor, and he wasn't as handsome as Lanza (when the later kept his weight under control), but his looks and acting didn't detract from the very real excitement that his singing awakened. His delivery of the title song is riveting.

Every bit his equal is Bourvil, a great actor (and a very good singer, though with no voice to speak of) who was good in pretty much everything he did. You have to speak French to appreciate him; he's good at physical comedy, and there's lots of it for him in this movie, but it's his way of delivering lines that made him a great actor in comedy as well as drama. His two numbers in this film are true masterpieces.

Annie Cordy is good in a Jane Powell-meets-Edith-Piaf sort of way. The rest of the cast is fine.

The only thing that is below par in this movie is the choreography. Compared to what Hollywood had been doing for two decades, the dance numbers here are strictly amateur.

In short, a truly great movie musical, and one that anyone who loves the genre should definitely see.

A Pleasant B-Movie of the 50's

The wealthy Dr. William Barton (Jeff Morrow) organizes an expedition to the Florida Everglades with the scientists Dr. Thomas Morgan (Rex Reason), Dr. Borg (Maurice Manson) and Dr. Johnson (James Rawley) to capture the Creature. They navigate in the ship of Capt. Stanley (David McMahon) with Jed Grant (Gregg Palmer) and Dr. Barton's wife Marcia Barton (Leigh Snowden) joins the team. Dr. Barton is paranoid with the jealousy of Marcia and Jed is harassing her in the trip.

They chase and capture the Creature that is totally burnt. Without breathing through the gills, the Creature is turned into an air breather through his hidden lungs and brought to the ranch of Dr. Barton in California. Dr. Morgan defends the thesis that the Creature responds to the way that he is treated and asks people to be not violent with him. But Dr. Barton is near a breakdown with his jealousy of Marcia.

"The Creature Walks Among Us" is a pleasant B-movie of the 50's and the conclusion of the Black Lagoon trilogy. This is a film that belongs to my childhood and today I have just seen it again. My vote is seven.

John Berry was a director who had to leave his country ,after Edward Dmytryk informed against him,in the McCarthyism days ;he spent much time in France where he made a handful of movies,none of which is particularly memorable .

"Je Suis Un Sentimental " is a rather stupid title ;Berry seems torn between true film noir (an innocent man is to die on the guillotine)and a spoof on it (many scenes ,notably in the hospital or in the court,verge on farce) After so many blue jokes,Eddie Constantine and his "extra texture!extra texture!read all about it!" seem irrelevant;the story of the journalist ,selfish,careless and indifferent ,who becomes a lawman,had been told with much greater strength by Henry Hathaway in his classic "call north 777"(1948);also handicapped by starlet Bella Darvi's amateurish playing:as a lawyer trying to save her client from the guillotine,she's about as convincing as a Barbie Doll worrying about her new dress.

Some characters (the noble,his son,the actor performing Hamlet ) might have been interesting,had they been more developed .

Constantine has plenty of go,but he was never given truly decent material.

Another half-hearted reconstructionist movie made in Putin's Russia

As if there is nothing more interesting in today's Russia except for marital problems of successful muscovites, more and more directors turn themselves to the Soviet era. Indeed, Russian "back in the future" movies happen to be quite amusing set against the latest shallow "real-life dramas". "Park Sovetskogo Perioda" is stuffed with aged Soviet actors, Soviet tunes, clothes and allusions, ready to burst like a cabbage roll, swimming in Red Soviet Sauce. Everything is predictable in absence of a strong story line. There are some sarcastic pearls too, strewn across the story but it's a far cry from the dark moody atmosphere of "Zerkalo dlya geroya" (1987) that started the trend 20 years ago. The message is simple: Soviet style might be cute but not for those who inhabit the totalitarian reserve. So, you're happy to live in the democratic society with all its lies and crimes. Dude, your personal problems are just ridiculous as long as you're not a Gulag prisoner. "My iz budushchego"(2008) is another fine and newer example of a reconstructionist movie. There's way more action in there (World War II), so you might want to give it a try.

A typical Randolph Scott film, but not a major effort

"Ten Wanted Men" probably would not make a list of must see films, for the simple reason that it was released during the 50's as a movie bound for the Saturday afternoon double feature bill at the local movie house. The viewer will recognize a lot of Grade-B western movie actors, and this does give a bit of nostalgia to the film.

Scott plays the rancher in the valley with most of the power and influence, while Richard Boone plays an up-and-comer who has designs to crowd in on Scott's area. Assisting Boone in this plan are veteran western heavies Leo Gordon and Lee Van Cleef and Dennis Weaver playing the sheriff before his "Gunsmoke" days. As indicated, it is a simple tale of the good guy against the bad guy, with a fistic brawl between Scott and Gordon settling the issue. A good film for the western fans.

Dark and cold, yet cleverly humorous European cinema

Musta Jää is a dark and cold love triangle and at times quite humorous one. It makes you laugh the first moment and the second it gives you the chills. Director Petri Kotwica clearly had no rush making this, because it seem so well finished, with not much faults. The only thing that I think didn't work all the time was the score. It is a score by a talented cello player from Apocalyptica, but it was playing maybe a bit too much during the movie. It's a minor minus, but not a big one.

All the actors are just fantastic, and the characters are very interesting. Outi Mäenpää is one of the best finnish actresses and she plays Saara, who finds out her husband is cheating on her. It happens the day she turns 40. Husband Leo is played by Martti Suosalo, a very fine actor too. Leo is having an affair with his student, 29 year old Tuuli (Ria Kataja). Saara starts planning a revenge, that is megalomanic and wonderful to watch, she even creates herself a new identity for it. The plot twists are not stunning but very entertaining and well made.

Movie is good looking too, visually. I think it's not a bit lower than the European medium of cinema. In my opinion it is by far the best finnish movie made in last few years, with Kaurismäki's Laitakaupungin Valot of course. This makes Petri Kotwica one of the most interesting new finnish directors. And this proves he's a great writer too. Movie has a lot of small little things - of acting, characters, cinematography, dialog - that are just genius, not really that much seen in finnish cinema. Much of it happens in Saara's mind. Not that much that you could analyze it like Ingmar Bergman's Persona (which has some fine similarities), but still some. The whole masquerade sequence is one of the things i like a lot too.

I recommend Musta Jää to people who like a well written, well acted and well directed little dark but cleverly humorous European, almost an art film-like cinema. Not for ones who dislike semi-low tempo, and too intelligent structure.

Touching drama from an A.J. Cronin novel...

DIRK BOGARDE gives one of his more restrained performances in the title role, a man whose friendship with a young boy (JON WHITELEY) drives a wedge between the boy and his over-protective father (MICHAEL HORDERN). It's the interplay between these three characters that drives the story and there are some melodramatic events before the happy ending.

But it takes its time in developing the characterizations, sags in the middle and then picks up again during the last half-hour when all the melodramatic conflicts have to be resolved.

Unfortunately, the TCM print shows murky color photography (especially after showing a dazzling print of BLACK NARCISSUS). Whether the film was shot in a process other than the usual British color I don't know, but the color photography was sometimes less than satisfying.

The story is one of friendship that the boy so badly needs when his father has too little time to share many activities with him. The bond between him and the Spanish gardener is based on mutual trust and the boy comes to hate his father when he realizes that he's been the cause of the man being jailed for a crime he didn't commit.

JON WHITELEY gives a remarkably natural performance for a child actor and his scenes with DIRK BOGARDE and MICHAEL HORDERN are excellently played.

There are problems of pacing that plague some parts of the film, but the last half is particularly absorbing and leads to a satisfying conclusion. Well worth watching.

A forgotten film that deserves to be un-forgotten

The Vagabond King did have the ingredients in the first place to be good. And it was. The story is rather old-fashioned and has a couple of dull spots, but I also think it is quite charming and well-meant too. You do forget that though when you see the lavish production values, the costumes, sets and photography are all gorgeous to look at, and hear the beautiful score and memorable songs that add so much to the film's quality. Song of the Vagabonds is especially catchy. The choreography and direction, apart from a couple of stage-bound moments, are otherwise skillful. The cast also add a lot. Kathryn Grayson is a charmer, Rita Moreno plays her role with both grace and fire and you can never go wrong with Vincent Price as narrator. The real surprise though was Oreste, handsome in looks, dashing in acting ability and ringingly resonant in voice, one does wonder why he like the film was forgotten afterwards. All in all, a very well-done film that is worthy of more appreciation. 8/10 Bethany Cox

good movie - watch it

This is one of the better Filipino suspense/horror films that, aside from being tightly written and beautifully shot, has shown a lot of commercial viability. A rare feat nowadays when you either have an empty formula film or non-commercially viable atmospheric horror classic.

Cinematography is superb, the green cast of the hospital int. shots are personal favorite. Although i've seen it on countless music videos and other horror films abroad, it worked because it serves the mood of the film well.

One flaw is the excessive use of familiar faces which took away some of the suspense, but then again, they may be one of the reason why the movie was made in the first place.

Over all - a good film that i would recommend. it raised the bar of Filipino horror-suspense films a notch. Stop reading and get a copy.

Original and intriguing

I've just come back from the premiere at the London film festival and I've thoroughly enjoyed, it but before I say anything, do not expect it to be "a mix between V for Vendetta and the Dark knight" which is a complete nonsense I read earlier, it's nothing like it.

In fact, the sci fi element is only a small (albeit crucial) part to the story, most of it taking place in present day London.

It's more of a psychological drama, a bit of a slow starter as well until all the pieces are put together and it starts making sense. To be honest the less you know about the story, the better otherwise it will ruin your enjoyment

The acting is excellent, I would say it really is Eva Green's movie, she shines throughout the movie with a rather difficult role and is absolutely beautiful. Sam Riley and Ryan Philippe are very good too although they have a little less material to play with.

I think it's going to be hard sell as it is unlike anything I have seen, and if they try to market it as an action/sci fi movie, it will be very misleading but I still definitely recommend it if you're looking for something a bit different.

Slow moving and VERY misleading!

I am a huge horror buff and found myself looking around my local Blockbuster the other night. After a short while I stumbled on to the DVD entitled "Freak Show". Immediately I was drawn to it because the cover art states "Banned in 43 Countries"! Also, the back cover art reads "one of the most horrific movies of the last few years" or something of that sort. Well let me be the first to tell you --- This is a complete SHAM.

The movie starts off very slow and bored me to sleep in the first 30 minutes. Because I am a huge fan of B-rate horror movies, I managed to down (3) of my favorite energy drinks in hopes of pulling through to the end. I will not ruin this awful movie for you, but I will let you know that I will NOT rent or buy anymore Asylum movies after this rip-off. How can this movie be banned in 43 countries, yet have ZERO amount of gore until the last 10 minutes? Not only was there no gore, the movie lacks anything that resembles something suspenseful or scary! The last 10 minutes of this film is the high point, and that falls very short of the films potential.

If your interested in seeing a low budget version of HBO's series Carnivale, then this is the one. If your a horror fan and want to be completely ripped off by false advertising then go ahead and rent this one. You too will be as irritated as I am. The production value of this film was excellent, but the plot was very boring and there is absolutely nothing scary about this one. This was a complete waste of time. It amazes me how they can write that this film was the most "horrific and disturbing film in years" and "banned in 43 countries" yet give no sources or credits. Total BS!

You won't be getting my money anymore if you continue to mislead the public. Even the low budget horror fans can say enough is enough and shop elsewhere. There are too many other fine films to see, than to be ripped off by flashy cover art and totally false and misleading claims. TWO THUMBS DOWN!
