Review :

A little nonsense now and then, is cherished by the wisest men.

This is one of Cantinflas' movies with the most heart. Cantinflas' exchange with children reveals as much about his comic genius as it does his underlying humanitarian attributes. It is easy to see with this movie why Cantinflas is considered the quintessential Mexican "tramp"... because in all he does, with all his faults, and despite the joking around, he still has a conscious. This movie will make you bust a gut (like my father usually does when he sees it), as well as leave you all warm and fuzzy inside. If you like this movie as much as I do, you will also enjoy El Bombero Atomico.

QUEEN OF BABYLON (Carlo Ludovico Bragaglia, 1954) **1/2

A friend of mine – who, apart from being a well-known local film-buff, occasionally invites me (and three like-minded others) to his old-fashioned home theater to watch 16mm prints of vintage Hollywood movies – had, during our periodical meetings, often voiced his wish to revisit the movie under review. Therefore, when I was later contacted by an enthusiastic American film collector that happened to have a vast amount of titles in this vein at his disposal, I naturally acceded to his earnest request. Now that the Easter season is just around the corner, I was curious to learn what the fuss was all about and, naturally, I immediately got around to watching it as part of my annual Epic movie marathon.

I would be lying if I said that I was expecting to be overwhelmed by an Italian peplum whose only capsule review I was aware of (Leonard Maltin's) merely awarded it a *1/2 rating. But I was not really prepared for what I eventually got either: if this film were any campier, Indian chieftains would have convened in it to hold their war councils! Right from the outset, I was in for a laugh-out-loud moment when one of two horsemen is seen having trouble descending from his steed (ostensibly to cut off two corpses hung from a tree and give them a decent burial)…by which time soldiers from the opposing army reach them and kill hero Ricardo Montalban's elderly lieutenant (which, naturally, sets the revenge plot in motion). Besides, we are supposed to believe that a stunning redhead like Rhonda Fleming is an abandoned child of nature that lives blissfully with her animals in a cave (and yet her first appearance has her stretched out on a rock soaking in the sun and splashing in the water!); when the Assyrians attack the village in search of Montalban and in retaliation for Fleming's harboring of him, the soldiers leave just one woman alive (having been spared for being too old)!; a brutish Assyrian thug rapes Fleming when he traps her in the cave; the captured girls dim-wittedly display their dancing skills when they are offered a chance of survival by performing before the King (but, obviously, they are able to learn the intricate choreography overnight!); Montalban proves remarkably resilient throughout – when pierced with an arrow early on, he promptly removes this to impale a soldier on it and, again, during a particularly animated tavern brawl!; in an obvious attempt to out-do the man-eating lions from QUO VADIS (1951), here we get victims being fed to alligators…only these appear much smaller (being clearly younger) when the protagonist grapples with them in a pool for the King's amusement – naturally, while they get to kill their fair share of people, the stout Montalban effortlessly defeats one reptile after another!; the final confrontation, then, between Montalban and chief villain Carlo Ninchi is carelessly handled in a silent, hurried fashion!

In the past, I have checked out a quartet of Bragaglia (who died at the venerable age of 103!)'s genre efforts – notably HANNIBAL (1959; co-directed with Edgar G. Ulmer) and AMAZONS OF ROME (1961; co-directed with Vittorio Cottafavi); however, during my ongoing schedule, I should also be getting to his THE SWORD AND THE CROSS (1958) and THE FOUR MUSKETEERS (1963), while I might also be able to acquire the well-regarded THE MIGHTY CRUSADERS (1958). Similarly, renowned scribe Ennio De Concini contributed to innumerable such entries from 1948-63. As for the two leads, I recently watched Fleming (whose career seemingly lost its momentum after 1960) in YANKEE PASHA and have William Castle's SERPENT OF THE NILE – THE LOVES OF CLEOPATRA (both 1954) set up for the near-future; with respect to her co-star, I have MARK OF THE RENEGADE (1951) and THE SARACEN BLADE (1954; also by Castle) lined up. Supporting them here are Roldano Lupi (a Pedro Armendariz look-alike playing the historical figure of King Assur) and Tamara Lees (wife of actor Bonar Colleano in real-life). Finally, and for the record, other films to be found within this Mesopotamian subgenre are SLAVES OF BABYLON (1953; yet another William Castle entry) and THE HERO OF BABYLON (1963; which I have just acquired) – both of which are upcoming viewings – as well as WAR GODS OF BABYLON (1962; which I watched not too long ago) and I AM SEMIRAMIS (1963; one I foolishly missed out on Italian TV).

Friendship, betrayal, redemption in the Australian outback

I just finished screening "September" at the Toronto International Film Festival and I was more than impressed with this feature. The film is perfectly paced, has a meaningful plot and flawless acting. A well written screenplay builds a beautiful story about racial differences between friends, old and young, and how color and class can interfere with and shape human bonds and heart-felt relationships. This is a truly unique and beautiful Australian film with a cross-cultural theme and emotional resonance, not to mention the beautiful cinematography of a very isolated and serene part of Australia. I would definitely recommend this film and also see it again.

Two feathers would have been enough

I had the advantage of watching Zoltan Korda's 1939 'The Four Feathers' on one afternoon and this his 'Storm over the Nile' on the next and since there have been at least 5 versions filmed cannot understand why it was not issued as 'The Four Feathers' or more appropriately 'The Two Feathers' as those given to Lieutenants Thomas Willoughby and Peter Burroughs were largely irrelevant to the plot although getting Harry Faversham flogged in the original and just incarcerated in the second ? One could believe John Clements considered himself a Coward but not Anthony Steele. I would cross the street and a few deserts for Mary Ure but not June Duprez- she deserved the far from noble Ralph Richardson but not Laurence Harvey who started off the sequel. Laurence Harvey started off with a reddish brown rat on his forehead which might well have saved him from Retinal damage when his lost his Hat. Indeed it is hard to select a single Actor or Actress who was better in the original and usually considered superior version but that is after we have watched both. As a stand alone Storm over the Nile is both more watchable and allowed Zoltan Korda to clean up several nonsenses from his original. Such as how and why John Durrance became sun blind. Ralph Richardson leading his troops keeping that he was blind a secret. The hovering vultures and other reasons why LH tries more convincingly to shoot himself. How Harry Faversham passed over the so important File and the Mahdi's guards searching them for it. All in all certainly not deserving the criticism - who shouldn't any Director use the same footage twice or shoot an overlong schedule and then divide it into two ? Nobody has to pay to watch any Film or spend the time glued to the telly.

Maria Schell was miscast

Why Maria Schell? If you have read Zola's masterpiece -"l'assommoir" the seventh of the Rougon Macquart saga, and one of the finest, surpassed only by "Germinal"- ,you wonder why Clement chose her when the part was tailor made for Simone Signoret. On the other hand ,Suzy Delair was the ideal Virginie Poisson, hypocrite venomous and vile .They say her buttocks were "dubbed" (by Liliane Montevecchi's) during the famous scene of the spanking ! René Clément did a good job even if his adaptation seemed sometimes tame and timid .Zola's depictions are so intense that it's hard to transfer them to the screen. But the " fête de Gervaise " ,with the gargantuan meal comes close to fully recreate it,and it was not easy since in the book it spreads over about twenty pages.

Despise some reservations, this is an unqualified must for good cinema lovers.

Great movie stars, great scenery, satisfying B-movie.

Caught this on TCM late last night. Could not resist watching a film with Glenn Ford, Edward G. Robinson, Barbara Stanwyyck Barbara is the attractive woman you love to hate and plays it to the hilt. Edward G. Robinson is convincing as always as the villain-in-chief. Glenn Ford always a pleasure to watch. The scene in the saloon where Glenn Ford faces down the murdering henchman, surrounded by his cronies, is just what you want to see a reluctant hero do.

But what caught my attention most was the scenery. I am sure this is one of the 100 or more movies filmed in Lone Pine, California amidst the Alabama Hills* lying just north of town. Rock formations provide the rugged scenery where over 100 cowboy movies have been filmed with every major cowboy movie star. It was the setting for "Bad Day at Black Rock" with Spencer Tracy, Ernest Borgnine and Jack Palance. Films were made here with John Wayne, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Hopalong Cassidy, and it was also the setting for, surprisingly, "Gunga Din". With snow-capped Sierra Nevada peaks in the background, I tried but could not possibly identify Mount Whitney, at just under 15,000 feet, the highest point in the lower 48 USA states.

One reviewer above complains about the use of stock footage for the cattle stampede as well as for stampeding the (enemies') horses. I just marvel at the motion picture arts that they could even create such scenes at all. Did they pay some huge rancher to allow a cattle stampede??? That must have run off many pounds of expensive beef. The horse stampede must likewise have been expensive. If these were wild horses filmed at large, they sure did a skillful job intercutting the clips with the ranchers' corrals in the film.

All in all, a standard oater but with great movie stars, scenery and action, I enjoyed watching. I think you will too.

(* Oh, yes. The Alabama Hills. In California? They were named during the Civil War by miners sympathetic to the Confederate cause. If you should drive North on California State 395 en route perhaps to ski at Mammoth Mountain, spend a few minutes to detour through the Alabama Hills. And take your camera! You'll be glad you did. Well worth the time.)

Nice movie for an evening with the family

Kaiserjaeger, made by Willy Forst is a harmless film for the whole family. The plot is playing in the Tyrol, one of the provinces of Austria at the beginning of the 20th century. The very beautiful landscape is one of the most important elements of the film. Although the story is nothing very special there are some very good actors playing like Attila Hoerbiger one of the most famous German speaking actors of that time. A mixture of beautiful landscape, the glory time of the Austrian monarchy and its army, love and humor.

Review :

This film could have been better if....

The first time I ever saw or heard of BRAIN FROM PLANET AROUS, I was twelve and it was shown on "Creature Features." When I first saw it, I thought it was kind of cheap, but I enjoyed it. Years later I heard of its bad reputation but I had my memories of it not being all that bad. Seeing it again as an adult, I actually found much the films ludicrousness entertaining. Not just that, I was surprised by the films slightly unusual premise: the alien brain named Gor bent on taking over the Earth is a criminal. The rest of the Arousians are like Vol- a policeman from Arous sent to arrest the evil Gor - basically peaceful. It's slightly unusual for a film from this period for the alien invader to be portrayed as not representative of his race. The idea of alien police man stalking an alien criminal (as a previous commentator in this forum has noted) has turned up in few science fiction novels. This plot also shows up in the excellent 1987 thriller THE HIDDEN.

While the films special effects are cheap, they are no better or worse than those in most other programmer films made on this budget from the same period. The film does has some really ludicrous moments already mention by previous reviewers. Some complaints mentioned in this forum are unjustified and seem to be the result of straining. Like the commentator who complained about bodies not decaying. It's absurd, but it is the kind of mistake that turns up all the time even in "good" movies.

One of the films main problems is John Agar. As film historian and 50's science fiction expert Bill Warren has pointed out, John Agar tries, but he can't pull it off. When he becomes possessed and tries to be evil, he comes across more as comical than menacing. If a much better actor was cast, perhaps this film might be more highly regarded. I think a good example would be to compare Agar's performance to that of Lew Ayers in DONOVAN'S BRAIN (See my entry on that film). DONOVAN'S BRAIN has a similar theme: evil disembodied brain bent on world conquest takes over the body of a scientist. Ayers was convincing, Agar is not.

Perhaps the strangest thing about this film is that when it first came out, reviewers dismissed it as a "routine programmer" "conventional science fiction" and "just another double bill shocker." Regardless of what you think of this film, I'm sure you will agree those words certainly don't apply to BRAIN FROM PLANET AROUS.

Till next time...Your Old Pal Jim.

The Chicago mob who comes in to take over Tokyo!

After World War II, Hollywood saw the Far East as simply a new background for familiar heroics... "House of Bamboo" was in fact a remake of a 1948 gangster melodrama called "The Street With No Name" with Richard Widmark...

An army cop (Robert Stack) with a charming widow (Shirley Yamaguchi) moves into undercover action in collaboration with the Japanese security authorities against Tokyo gangsters, and their leader Robert Ryan, an intellect mastermind racketeer, head of an impressive organization engaged in robberies, fraudulent businesses, and murder whose plots challenge the magnificent effort of the international police..

With fascinating Japanese locations and photographed in CinemaScope and Technicolor, the film depicted the wonders of Fujiyama, the extraordinary city of Tokyo and its back streets in water ways invoking mystery and intrigue...

A freak accident causes a blue collar worker (Singh) and his supervisor (Wong) to swap souls.

Review :

Just Laugh Loh! - Funny, though lacking in focus and direction

Directed by Singapore's most successful commercial filmmaker, Jack Neo's "Just Follow Law" looks into the rigidness of the local civil service. From "Money No Enough" to "I Not Stupid", his films never fail to make a social commentary on the society, with characters who reflect reality of life in Singapore.

Through the experiences of a director and technician who exchanges souls in a freak accident, "Just Follow Law" demonstrates the bureaucracy, endless red tape, and inefficiency of government bodies and organisations. It would strike a chord with local blue collared workers. But the emotions and angst of the common people which made the "I Not Stupid" series very strong, was not well-developed. The sub-plot of soul switching and 'mini-MTVs' slowed down the pace and shifted its focus during the middle.

After criticisms of her English on foreign TV, Fann Wong showed her improvement playing the elite scholar Tanya Chew. After the switch of souls, she slipped in comfortably as a vulgar technician who scratches her (his) backside and sits with open legs. She certainly made her 6-figure paycheck worth and proved her versatility in acting.

Gurmit Singh was not overly exaggerated as in most of the comedies he performed (including the disastrous Singapore Idol hosting), but turned in a subtle and gentle performance as a trapped woman.

Other minor characters such as Lao Char Bo (Fann's mother), the Indian security guard and the administrative staff stole the show with their stereotypical, yet realistic portrayal of people we see around. Are we laughing at them or laughing at ourselves?

Product Placement is a double-edged sword. Without sponsors, there won't be a movie, but it diminishes the artistic merits of the movie. Spot the number of sponsors and see how much you get correct at the end credits. It isn't too difficult as most are repeat sponsors from previous movies. So expect Fann Wong to open a fridge full of Super products, also indulging in her New Moon abalone. Talk about subtlety! Tsk Tsk!

It gets worse as Jack Neo (who plays a doctor) also appears in a Mitsubishi ad and Fann Wong appeared in a Bella ad in the movie. Double roles or breaking characters? Major fault.

"Just Follow Law" does provide some laughs along the way through is characterisation and little situations we face in our working life. Unfortunately, mistakes made in his previous films resurface again. Songs should be used to bring a film forward not stall it Even though Billy Koh's Ocean Butterfly helped to produce the songs, 3 songs were too much. The focus on office politics got lost along the way, and the ending became another one of those predictable stage plays used in his last movie.

"Just Follow Law" still screams 'Channel 8' and lacks the movie quality. Overall, a good 'Chinese New Year' piece for the family, but expect no awards. Jack Neo may be a good social commentator but still has some time to go before he can be considered an accomplished director.

A trippy, often mesmerizing journey into the bizarre...

"Frankenstein's Bloody Nightmare" takes some of its plot line, story and inspiration from an obvious source, and then quickly surrounds us in an abstract world of sight and sound, held together in loose narrative fashion by the obsessions of the young Victor Karlstein.

The aesthetic of the film in nearly every respect is extremely abstract, but this does not really detract from the story. Mostly the style blends effectively with script and characters to create a mesmerizing and immersing atmosphere. To his credit, there is little of the film that doesn't feel like a very deliberate part of the vision of its creator: director/writer John R. Hand.

The characters and story (though probably intentionally so) are the weakest. Normally I'd say this is a big drawback, but somehow in this film, the very style and sense of it kind of becomes the real character. It almost feels like you're having a bizarre, trippy dream through someone else's eyes.

With a dated and yet somehow timeless feel, the film's greatest strengths and weaknesses derive equally from its uncompromisingly abstract reality. It will likely have a very polarizing effect on viewers, but that is more a plus than a minus in my book.

"Frankensteins Bloody Nightmare" is a painstakingly crafted trip into the bizarre. Often defiant of classification, it evokes reflections reminiscent of Cronenberg, Tsukamoto and Godard.

A strong, strange and unique debut feature from writer/director John R. Hand. It will be interesting to see what he comes up with next.

ORDINARY AND LIFELESS

Very ordinary, lifeless and below-average directed adaptation of the fairy tale with Rumpelstilzchen himself as an annoying dwarf, an uncaring cast and a very poor song. Very inadequate in the execution of the simplest of special effects, as if the makers did not care (was it too low budgeted?). Judging from the result one would not expect that professionals like director Fredersdorf (specialist in children's films) were involved in making this film.
