The story of a successful dancer's fight with her husband for the attention of their daughter.
Watch Dance Little Lady Trailer :
Review :
A 'Women's Own' short story melodrama
Britain. Mid Fifties. A worthless opportunist pushes his wife to become a prima ballerina while all the time he is cheating on her with another dancer. She finds out about his affair and drives off, only to crash in a near fatal accident. The doctors tell her that she will never dance again. The husband leaves her and their child to do a Continental European and American tour with his new meal-ticket lover. A sympathetic doctor helps the ex-ballerina to recover (falling in love with her in the process - as they always do) and the daughter becomes a dance prodigy. Mum teaches her all she knows. The husband, now Hollywood talent scout, returns to Britain, having dumped his lover in New York. His producer thinks the little girl is just perfect for his new picture and threatens to fire Dad if he can't get his Mum to sign a contract. Dad tries to blackmail his wife by sending the babysitter home and spreading rumours about her and the Nice Doctor. The house catches fire putting the little girl's life in danger and Dad heroically saves her loosing his own life in the process.
Predictable, stolid movie equivalent of a 'Women's Own' short story. Wet Sunday afternoon fare if you have nothing better to do - which I obviously haven't.
Professionaly enough made, though the finale is ludicrous. Here's the situation: The little girl is trapped on roof of the burning building "No-one can reach her" the crowd of onlookers tell each other. Dad runs into the next building, climbs up, runs past two firefighters waving a hose around jumps across the 4 foot!! gap between the buildings, picks her up, wraps her in his jacket (why?) then THROWS her across to one of the firemen. Why he would think that this brave firefighter who has been unable to get across so ludicrously small a gap will be able to catch and hold a girl, loosely wrapped in an over-sized, unsecured jacket is beyond me - but then people do do stupid things in moments of crisis (and mediocre British films). Dad then does that stupid 'throwing his arms in the air, bad silent-movie acting' thing as the roof collapses beneath him and he plunges to his implied doom. I say 'implied' because the film making is so shaky at this point an onlooker's voice has to shout "look out! the roof is collapsing" to let us know what is happening.
Some of the acting in this film is so ritualised and formulaic it is like watching a Japanese Noh play or Indian Dancing. Watch out for the Mum's "Great British turn away to show suppressed emotion" that she does when the little girl asks from her hospital bed if Daddy is "all right?". This is followed immediately by a near perfect "Shoulder touch of support and unrequited love" by the doctor. Classic Bad British Movie Acting moves of their time.

Nothing Serious But Mildly Entertaining
Masterson of Kansas (1954)
** (out of 4)
Decent, if by the numbers, Western has Bat Masterson (George Montgomery) and Doc Holliday (James Griffith) about to shoot it out when Wyatt Earp (Bruce Cowling) breaks it up. Soon a friend to the Indians is convicted of a crime he didn't commit and the Indians are threatening violence if the man dies for the crime. Now it's up to Bat, Doc and Earp to try and figure out who the real killer is. William Castle will always be remembered for the cheap horror movies he made at the end of his career and it's pretty funny to look back on his earlier days because you'll see countless Westerns that he did for Columbia. This here is one of them and it's certainly a lot better than some he made but at the same time no one is going to confuse this for the work of John Ford. I think for the most part the film remains childish and fun as there's never anything for you to take too serious. If you're into history then it's best to skip this film as there are many liberties taken but I guess that should go without saying. I thought mixing up the three characters made for an entertaining picture and I think the stuff with the Indians also made for some mild entertainment. The majority of the running time is dialogue with the three men constantly arguing with one another and making threats that you know will never happen. I did enjoy the cast with Griffith easily stealing the film as Holliday. He brings a certain toughness to the role but also handles some of the quieter moments dealing with his illness. Montgomery is a tad bit stiff but this actually helps the character and Cowling is fun as Earp. There have been countless films with Doc and Earp so if you want something serious then it's best to look elsewhere. This film here is just 72-minutes worth a "B" fun. Nothing serious. Just mindless entertainment.

It's like a travelogue....
"Sabaka" is not a great film by any standard, though, in a pinch, it's worth watching as a time-passer. I know this is faint praise, but it's just not a movie I can strongly endorse. The only reason I decided to watch the film is that Boris Karloff was in the film, though he was generally wasted.
The film is set in India and it was nice to see that the film crew actually went to this country to film it. HOWEVER, it was also a severe disappointment that none of the folks in the film were Indians! While Karloff looked rather Indian, most of the actors simply looked like Hollywood actors painted up to look like Indians--which they were. And, in addition to having Hollywood types in the roles, the film also suffered from 'travelogue-itis'--the horrible need to film lots of native scenes and place them into the film--often at the most inappropriate times. For example, during a scene where the jungle is on fire, there is a scene involving a leopard killing some helpless animal---why?!?! What does this have to do with a forest fire?! The story is about a cult started by a couple of scum-bags. They worship the false fire god Sabaka--who is evil and full of nastiness. So it's up to a nice young Sabu-wannabe to infiltrate the gang and bring them all to justice using his trusted jungle friends. None of it is all that interesting but at least it isn't all that dull. And at least it's in color--nice, pretty color. But the story is a bit uninspired and it's just a slightly below average time-passer.

Review :
Wolfit memorable, but film wastes opportunities
One of several big screen adaptations of du Maurier's TRILBY, this was notable for utilising the author's original illustrations in costume, and to some extent, settings. It also had the benefit of a characteristically flamboyant and forceful performance from the great Donald Wolfit. He's able to engender a small degree of sympathy for the grubby and boorish Svengali (including his frustration, as a classical musician, with Trilby's continual rendering of a rather wan little ditty, 'Alice, Where Art Though?' later to form the aptly dowdy signature tune to OPEN ALL HOURS). He's compelling whenever the film focuses on him, despite more than a touch of Frankie Howerd in places. Unfortunately it concentrates rather too much in the early stages on the ageing English art students, and not helped by some crude editing, the story doesn't grip as it should. Hildegarde Neff brings beauty, intelligence and a sense of vulnerability to Trilby, but she comes over as about as Irish as Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, whose sublime lyric soprano tones are heard on the soundtrack. Terence Morgan can make little impact as Billy, and despite being good to look at, with the colour and atmosphere of the early Hammer horrors, the whole enterprise is lacking in drive, with too many short scenes on cramped sets. The finale at Covent Garden where Svengali dramatically relinquishes his hold on Trilby is especially disappointingly handled, with the director failing to build any tension or sense of occasion, then allowing what remains to fall flat.
One of those films that has its moments, but falls firmly into the 'could have been so much better' category.

Most excellent version I have seen.
I saw this movie in Honolulu in 1956. What sets it apart from all other versions is that the heroine was sang and played by a Japanese artist (rather than the clownish effect caused by a caucasion artist being disguised as oriental ) and the magnificent scenery...it was shot on location in Japan. The lead male singer, Filacuridi, and supporting cast, delivered a superb presentation. Another reviewer stated; "...no Japanese believes it is true..."...well, most great operas were based on myth and fantasy, as witnessed by Wagner's, The Ring, in my opinion, the greatest of them all.

Average thriller saved by a future comedian.
After Lloyd Bridges is mugged on his way back from dropping an old buddy off at a Spanish airport, you almost expect to hear him mutter, "Looks like I picked the wrong week to stop drinking!". Like Leslie Nielsen and Peter Graves, his serious co-stars from the 1980 comic masterpiece "Airplane!", he started off as a dramatic actor, one in his case that was often action packed. Here, he gets more than he bargained for when he meets this old acquaintance by chance in Spain and ends up in an espionage-filled adventure surrounding that old spy plot favorite-microfilm. Taking him from Spain to London and back to Spain again, this film is predictable, giving a Spanish version of Sydney Greenstreet into the mix, an exciting fire sequence, and a Mardi-Gras like festival where the villain attempts an originally unique escape. Refreshingly short, it highly resembles an early TV movie with its commercial-like break fadeouts and sometimes preposterous plot twists.

Joe Branch (Brett King), reputed to be the son of Jesse James, comes riding into Coffeyville Kansas in 3-D, looking for proof one way or the other regarding the question of who is father was. He rescues Kate Manning (Barbara Lawrence) from being lynched by a mob because she had killed the son of the towns's leading citizen while defending her honor, or what was left of it. Rescuing Kate is an important plot hinge, in a movie that makes little or no sense historically or plot-wise, as her father had ridden with Jesse James. Joe also has an idea that he can learn something by making contact with the Daltons, and his method of doing that is by holding up the train to steal an Army payroll, as he knows the Daltons had intended to steal it themselves and knows they will come looking for him. Being smart enough to beat them to the payroll evidently doesn't equate to being smart enough to know the Daltons are going to be more than a little miffed when they find him. The title is a misnomer ...

Jesse James vs. the Daltons (1954)
** (out of 4)
William Castle directed this Western for Columbia about a young man (Brett King) who believes he's the son of Jesse James. The man seeks out the help of the Dalton Gang in hopes of finding Jesse who humor has it is still alive. This is certainly a "B" film but it does have a few good things going for it. Castle's direction is better than average, although he's really not given too much to work with. The screenplay is lazy to say the least and the leading man is as dull as anything. Another positive is the Technicolor, which leads to some good looking scenes. The film was originally released in 3D, which is obvious from all the things flying at the screen. This isn't a bad film but it's only for Castle completest.

During an air raid, a bomb explosion rocks the café and Carole is knocked unconscious. In her confused state, fantasies flash through her mind, and she seems to become Nell Gwyn of Old Drury, with Charles King looking very much like King Charles. Recovering, she is advised by her doctor to take a rest in the country and, there, another beau, Albert Gutman, prompts his grandmother, Lady Drayton, to invite Carole to their family home at Windsor. She accepts and telephones Charles but hangs up when his phone is answered by a female voice. Looking out on Windsor Castle, she sees herself as the young Queen Victoria and Albert as Prince Albert. Influenced by her day-dream, she accepts Albert's proposal. Charles arrives to tell her that all arrangements are made for her to leave with him and the company for Burma, but she refuses saying she will never marry...

The Bloom Is Off These Lilacs
When the producing/acting team of Herbert Wilcox and Anna Neagle got Errol Flynn he was willing to work for just about anything in Lilacs In The Spring. He owed the US government a lot of back taxes and was abroad so he couldn't be arrested for same and his epic William Tell had gone belly up. So the Wilcoxes were able to get Flynn for a fraction of his asking price from a decade ago for this Neagle film.
In it Anna Neagle plays a musical comedy star and her own daughter, in addition to reprising two of her previous screen roles in dream sequences, Queen Victoria and Nell Gwynn. The frequent use of flashbacks and imaginary sequences is going to leave the viewer quite a bit confused.
As for Errol Flynn he's both husband and father to Anna Neagle in her two different guises. The young Anna Neagle is caught between two suitors, producer David Farrar and stagedoor johnny Peter Graves. That is not the Peter Graves of Mission Impossible.
Neagle sings beautifully of course, she was one of the United Kingdom's premier musical comedy stars as well as a film star. As for Flynn he does a nice song and dance to Lily Of Laguna, but compare it to the number he did in Thank Your Lucky Stars with Warner Brothers during World War II, That's What You Jolly Well Get. Errol's aged quite considerably and it shows.
I wish both of these stars had teamed years earlier because they're a bit long in the tooth for this material, especially Flynn.

Review :
One of the hidden antiques from Beaconsfield Studio and Group 3 productions.
Make Me An Offer is now part of a collection of British comedies called the Long Lost Comedy Classics. A collection of films that disappeared off the radar but now having been re-found, have been transfered to DVD courtesy of Hollywood Classics LTD. Others in the collection are The Love Match, Orders Are Orders, Time Gentlemen Please, John & Julie and Miss Robin Hood.
It's with much happiness that I, a proud British man, am the first person to post a review of this delightful Peter Finch starrer, Make Me An Offer.
The story sees Peter Finch as Charlie, who having as as a boy fell in love with a Portland Vase during a trip to a museum, takes up his calling in life as an antiques dealer. However, we find Charlie in adulthood struggling to make the business work, he mopes around grumbling about the poverty line; grumbling that heaps further strain on his marriage and ability to run a steady home. But an answer to all his problems may have landed in his lap with a chance meeting with flamed haired Nicky (Adrienne Corri). For during a wander around the cottage she dwells in, Charlie spies his Holy Grail, but if he thought that Nicky was just a pretty face, and ripe for a picking, well he's in for a little more than he bargained for.
Directed by Cyril Frankel (director of School For Scoundrels after Robert Hamer was fired for his drinking problems), Make Me An Offer is adapted from the novel written by Wolf Mankowitz (who inputs additional dialogue to the screenplay from W.P. Lipscomb). Joining Finch and Corri in the cast are Ernest Thesiger, Wilfrid Lawson, Alfie Bass, Rosalie Crutchley & Finlay Currie. Whilst Richard O'Sullivan, future star of British sit-coms like Man About The House & Robin's Nest, appears as Charlie the boy. Filmed in Eastman Colour, the film has a charm that wistfully takes us back to a charming part of England when folk made the most of what they had. A time when dreams, no matter how far away they were, were still a beacon of hope to drive people on. Set as it is in the antiques business, money is naturally an overriding factor, but although Charlie Finch effervescent yearns to provide his wife Bella (Crutchley) with a fur coat he has long since promised her, monetary gain is not the issue here. Realisation of dreams and a love of art, particularly during a poverty stricken time, is what drives Make Me An Offer forward. The comedy is mixed with nice touches of poignancy, and during its last quarter auction sequences the film boasts excellent writing as a ringer operation involving many characters starts to unfold. To which we move to a finale that personally had me grinning from ear to ear.
As for the DVD? The transfer is very good, there's some fluctuation in colour and the sound mix has the odd crackle and pop, but there's nothing for anyone to worry about in the context of enjoying an old movie. So for anyone interested in 50s British cinema, particularly from the comedy genre, this film, as well as the rest in the set, is essential viewing. 7.5/10

Will they survive the impossible conditions?
A truly exciting war picture, probably the most realistic picture I've ever seen. Virtually all the main actors are the actual people portrayed in the events, and the settings appear also to be genuine. I don't think you could make such a picture any better. I was on the edge of my seat for the whole movie.
Larsen and his loyal crew make the run on small fishing vessels from Norway. They wish to run guns to fight the resistance against the Nazi occupation of Norway. The stormy and cold North Sea is a bleak and inhospitable place even in peaceful times. The resistance fighters boats, lightly armed, must evade German planes, brave the stormy weather, and dodge collaborators. Will they survive the impossible conditions? It's as exciting as they come. A great watch for the true war movie lover.

In 1896, Jeff Webster sees the start of the Klondike gold rush as a golden opportunity to make a fortune in beef...and woe betide anyone standing in his way! He drives a cattle herd from Wyoming to Seattle, by ship to Skagway, and (after a delay caused by larcenous town boss Gannon) through the mountains to Dawson. There, he and his partner Ben Tatum get into the gold business themselves. Two lovely women fall for misanthropic Jeff, but he believes in every-man-for-himself, turning his back on growing lawlessness...until it finally strikes home.

Review :
Is there something you want, Mr. Gannon?
Cunningly interesting Western from a director who had few peers in the genre. Much like other Anthony Mann pictures, The Far Country blends a potent pot boiling story with an adroit knowing of impacting scenery. Both of which play out amongst some of Mann's peccadilloes like honour, integrity, betrayal and of course, death!
The story sees fortune hunting partners Jeff Webster James Stewart and Ben Tatum Walter Brennan travel to Oregon Territory with a herd of cattle. Aware of the blossoming gold-boom, they plan to make a tidy profit selling the cattle in a Klondike town. Arriving in Skagway they find self-appointed judge Mr. Gannon John McIntire ready to meet out justice to Webster on account of Webster having fractured the law, all be it with honest cause, along the way. In punishment Gannon takes the partners herd from them, but they steal them back and head across the Canadian border to Dawson-with Gannon and his men in hot pursuit. Here beautiful women and a meek and lawless town will fill out the destinies of all involved.
Interesting from start to finish, The Far Country benefits greatly from James Stewart's bubbling anti hero in waiting portrayal and Mann's slick direction of the tight Borden Chase script. The cinematography from William H. Daniels is superlative, tho not done any favours by current DVD prints, and the film has a few surprises and a "will he wont he?" core reeling the viewers in. Paying dividends on re-watches for hardened genre fans, it still remains something of an essential viewing for first timers venturing into the wonderful, yet dark, Western world of Anthony Mann and James Stewart. 8/10
