Cold War Epic

Soldier of Fortune marked Clark Gable's first film away from MGM after his contract was not renewed. 20th Century Fox did right by him, gave him a film to shoot on location in Hong Kong and an actress who was at the height of her career as a new leading lady in Susan Hayward.

This was the second big epic film they shot in Hong Kong that year, the other being Love Is A Many Splendored Thing. Unlike the William Holden- Jennifer Jones epic, Soldier of Fortune leans more to adventure and intrigue than romance.

Hayward's husband Gene Barry is a prisoner of the Chinese government, apparently having taken some pictures he shouldn't have as a freelance photo journalist. Hayward's in Hong Kong to try and affect a rescue and she comes up against some unscrupulous types including Gable. Gable's more interested in her, but helping the husband's rescue is a package deal.

I would have hoped that with the one and only teaming of Gable and Hayward a better story could have been found. Soldier of Fortune isn't a bad film, hardly the worst thing either of them did, but in essence it's really a souped up Grade B adventure saga. The class of the players make it seem more than it is. Plus the fact it was done on location as opposed to the backlot of 20th Century Fox.

Soldier of Fortune has a good cast of character actors. Look for some good performances by Michael Rennie as the British inspector, Alexander D'Arcy as a conniving French rogue and Tom Tully as a slimy influence peddler.

Great French film that doesn't try to accomplish too much!

Its Jazzy music, running through the film, sets the tone for quick witted dialogue, full of turns, conversations that shouldn't have been heard, but meant a lot, and basically, dramas from couples which nevertheless love each other. As Vincent, obviously the character the director mostly likes, says near the end: "all important stories are love stories. But that doesn't mean they are all 'easy going'" I'm a fan of Karin Viard. She is constantly on the edge during the trip, but seems to learn something from the experience. She's very expressive, any lesser actress wouldn't be convincing at her, yes, hysterical moodiness. She's beautiful, but the film builds on that image a bit too much to my taste.

François Cluzet's Marc is a great counterbalance to all this "feeble humanists". He's mean, self centered, and incapable of empathy. I liked his "successful" character, specially after seeing him doing "Antoine", the exact opposite "a childish depressive and broke 'crosswords writer' for a local magazine" with the best G. Dépardieu at Les Apprentis (1995).

Rose-Marie and Caroline are fine, but I would have liked a bit more of "character development" for both.

Overall, I loved this movie, felt really well in the end (not the usual case for French films :)) and would definitely watch it again to get the subtle dialogue, the "lapsus" (Anne always "breaking a bottle") and the sheer enjoyment of two lovable characters who couldn't be more difficult. The tenderness scene at the fireplace while stranded in the middle of nowhere has a refinement rarely seen these days where sex scenes are used when there's nothing to say.

Shot at Lyon, and the city is referred at -mostly by Anne- about 8 times.

a true classic for the "cheesy horror" buffs

This film is truly enjoyable as one of the classic cheesy horror flicks of the 20th century. As plain country folk become terrorized by the animals on their farm who's minds are under the control of..."THE BEAST!"...who to my dismay only has two eyes...............Watch for Dick Sargeant as the tough, yet understanding officer.......Good, Clean , Horror!!!

Old Wine In a New Bottle with a message

I happened to see Pothan Vava in DVD, The movie was good in the sense that It provided a message at the end. Our Hero is the son of father and mother, who are from two different castes namely Hindu and Christian. The story portrays the social dilemma that he has to undergo as a result of this . It is told in a humorous manner with dire consequence at the end. Mammooty is at his best in dialogs delivery and the Christian slang he uses is fantastic. The rest of the character doesn't have much to portray. For Mammooty fans the movie may have several similarities to other roles he has portrayed

The plus point of the movie is the

1.songs 2.movie duration (2 hours) 3.Family viewing 4.Social Message

Throw in Sarah Brown, who's short on sinners at the mission she runs; Sky Masterson, who accepts Nathan's $1000 bet that he can't get Sarah Brown to go with him to Havana; Miss Adelaide, who wants Nathan to marry her; Police Lieutenant Brannigan, who always seems to appear at the wrong time; and the music/lyrics of Frank Loesser, and you've got quite a musical. Includes the songs: Fugue for Tinhorns, "Luck Be a Lady", "Sit Down, You're Rocking the Boat".

Simply a great screen adaptation of a stage classic!

In 1954 Marlon Brando was THE hot actor after his performances in Streetcar Named Desire and On The Waterfront. Frank Sinatra had yet to re-invent himself on the silver screen. But Sinatra's portrayal as the erstwhile Nathan Detroit, helped re-establish Sinatra with his fans.

It is a great screen version of a great play and the choices of leads and support players are terrific. Imagine a movie where Brando sings? This was his one and only singing role as he portrayed Sky Masterson. In addition the female leads, Jean Simmons and Vivian Blaine(replaying her stage role as Nathan's long suffering girlfriend Adelade), put in superlative efforts. Special mention goes to the great Stubby Kaye(as Nicely Nicely), and with all due respect to Eric Clapton, no one's version of Rockin' The Boat even comes close to Stubby's. Sheldon Leonard, who would go on to fame as TV producer of such shows as The Danny Thomas Show and The Dick Van Dyke Show does "Harry The Horse" wonders, B.S.Pulley is excellent as the harsh mannered and rough talking "Big Julie", and even Regis Toomey offers his excellence as "Brother Arvide".

It is one of the fun musicals to see, good comedy, and you get Sinatra and Brando. Soooooo "Luck Be A Lady Tonight" and brother..."it's your dice"

One of the best classics...

I have seen lot of Tamil movies. Most directors are always making either love films or sentimental one which is very annoying and irritating. Only a few movies are good and that too some of those are copied from English movies like Ghajini (Memento), Thenali (What Abot Bob) and so on. This year(2006) a lot of movies were released in south India. I guess around 20-30 movies (approx). Out of these only 2 movies were appreciable. One is Imsai Arasan 23 Pulikesi and another is Vettaiyadu Vilaiyadu. I especially appreciate this one. This movie is a turning point to all future movies to be made.

Directors are always making idiotic excuses by telling that people don't expect movies of different genre and creativity. As far as I am concerned this is best movie ever made in a very long time. The Director of this movie has proved all other directors are stupid. The comedy of this movie has it's timing and moments. Everyone in this movie has done a wonderful job. This is the first ever the best Slapstick Comedy movie I ever came across Tamil movies. Watch this movie. Enjoy the comedy. You'll appreciate this one for sure.

Shankar's one of the best productions and Vadivelu's best Comedy. He has earned it a lot. Music are all in olden style. It's like "Old is Gold". The language is the best part in this movie. They not only used pure Tamil, but at perfect time and proper places they have used Chennai Tamil which increases the humor more.

I hope that director's will open their eyes from this movie and will strive towards making different varieties of movies.

A 8.2/10 movie
