Review :

Bill Elliott suspects an apparent suicide is actually a murder

"Sudden Danger" is a competent b-movie, on the light noir side, one of the five that Bill Elliott made for Allied Artists, playing a detective in the sheriff's department. This one features Tom Drake and Beverly Garland in the main roles, both doing a nice job. Garland has a sizeable role calling for a variety of emotional reactions that she makes look easy. Helene Stanley has a good supporting part as a blonde gold digger. She wears what looks like a very well made mink stole.

Drake, blinded 5 years earlier accidentally, arrives home to find his mother an apparent suicide. His mother is a business partner in a firm undergoing a rough spot. A note turns up saying she did it for the insurance, so as to pay for another eye operation. The landlady (Minerva Urecal) says she heard them arguing a few days ago. This is enough to set Elliott onto Drake. He comes on like a bulldog at times, fastening onto the case and exerting pressure on Drake and his girl friend, Garland. The suicide note was typed on her machine.

Drake has a successful eye operation. Trying to prove his innocence, he continues to feign blindness. In the last half of the picture, both he and Elliott are pursuing their own paths. The story combines a police procedural with a wrong man trying to find the guilty party. A second murder adds a complication.

Altogether, this is quite a nice little picture. Hollywood reviews at the time considered it as easily average or above-average entertainment, accomplishing what it set out to do.
