Cool but not enough Mamie!

For 1955, well-made exploitation teen car-thief ring story with William Campbell (decent actor) as the lead and Keenan Wynn (wonderful actor) as an adult type throw this flick into second-gear immediately with a great dance scene, BUT..I only wish Mamie Van Doren had a bigger part. She was still a supporting B-actress in '55, but she's gold with a great blonde ponytail and some flashy jitterbug/rock dancing. Young John Saxon in small part is authentically youthful and naive.

A 5 out of 10. Best performance = Mamie Van Doren. Terse, almost powerful, yet topical. What can you say? Check it out and don't hold your nose in the air to films like this (which always made money and got no respect).

A love story you can get lost in

Rez Bomb is a love story you can get lost in. It declines to portray Native Americans in the set model of drug addiction and crime, and instead tells a charming tale of love on the run and against the odds that could be set anywhere.

Steven Simpson's direction brings a knowledge of the setting gleaned from years spent there and documentaries filmed there, and Pine Ridge inhabitants' status as second class citizens is starkly pictured throughout, yet Simpson somehow makes this film as joyous as it is damning, a fast-paced, rollicking ride in the company of great characters and a wicked soundtrack.

We saw it at the Glasgow Film Festival on Thursday (19.02.09) and the audience all seemed to love it, staying to quiz Simpson on this slow burning poverty he has brought so powerfully to light.

Standard "B" Western

"Seminole Rising" was your standard B western movie typically shown prior to the A feature as was standard in theaters prior to the 1960s. These were low budget movies that allowed small name actors to gain experience and audience exposure. Therefore it is unfair to grade them by the scale one might grade an A movie like "The Cowboys", "Shane", or "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance".

I found it to be a basic B movie, with little to brag on and little to complain about. While some seem bewildered by Seminoles residing in Texas it is lack of education that leads to this. With but a modicum of effort one learns that following the Second Seminole War (1835–1842) about 3,800 Seminoles were "given" lands "west of the Mississippi river". Seminoles in OK and TX? Yep!

Just an entertaining little movie that runs a perfect 74 minutes sans commercials. Not a movie to watch again and again, but it can be viewed several times in a lifetime if you leave 25 years in between.

Joys of meditation, excesses of reflection considered in a very Italian way

Maderna's film, challenging to watch though only 65 minutes long, deals with ultimate questions about what life means and how to live, but it presents them via a narrative so spare ordinary viewers are likely to find it baffling and unappealing—though, paradoxically, many of the amenities of Italian living are present: graceful landscape; an elegant old building; good food, well prepared, consumed at leisure; polite behavior. The "story" progresses slowly through a series of semi-tableaux with minimal dialogue, ending in fade-outs.

We begin with a shot of a road opening forward. Two young people, a boy and a girl, who later turn out to be graduate students, are in a car going along the road, the girl at the wheel. Their destination is a grand but slightly run-down country villa where they come to interview an aging writer who lives there as a recluse with two acolytes whom he supports. There were three, and the third turns up one night and talks about his useless wanderings.

There are several days of hopeful waiting when the writer—who's presumed to be on an upper floor meditating—puts off the students. "As they say," one acolyte tells them, "tomorrow is another day." And then a day or so later he says, "He will see you tomorrow, but one at a time." The students are welcomed and provided with a bedroom, towels, and pajamas. They share meals with the two long-haired followers, one tall and thin, the other stocky and bearded. The writer remains upstairs s and never communicates with the students, though he finally appears dramatically, shocking in appearance, after several days. But that is yet to come.

The bearded chap does most of the shopping and cooking, and the meals look like excellent Italian repasts—carefully selected ingredients, loving preparation. The girl even says one night, "Excellent roast beef. My compliments." Not much happens in the place besides ping-pong (played out of doors) and meals prepared mostly by the bearded chap (while the tall one is the ace pong man and he shows the girl his stroke in more ways than one). She tells him at breakfast she's been all over the world. She has also thoroughly read the writer's works and admires them, and she quotes by heart one passage about freedom and self-determination. The boy, who has long pretty hair, reveals to the cook that he's contemplating a sex change and taking hormones. He's popping too many of them, and one night they make him throw up.

After the writer's spectral appearance, the boy and girl leave separately. The boy drives the car and while driving, strips off all his clothes except a pair of the girl's striped underpants, which he's swiped. A song he listens to on the radio talks about freedom. A highway policeman stops him but then lets him go. The girl takes a bus to a town where she meets a woman friend who tells her she must be content with something other than her ideal job at first. She has told the tall thin acolyte she wants to work and stop living with her parents. In the final scenes the girl has discarded her shoes and begun panhandling on the street and the boy is walking off the road into a field with another man, perhaps for sex.

Everyone in 'Schopenhauer' is a seeker; maybe a knowledge of Schopenhauer's ideas about "will" and "representation" would help one interpret their paths, which may very well grow out of the German philosopher's belief that the world is not a rational place and that its ills are best confronted by adopting an ascetic lifestyle. One subject of the film clearly is the contemplative life and the peace it can bring; another, conversely, is the danger of excessive introspection. The acolytes, the girl notes, are like monks, and they seem to have achieved a state of peace. However, their world seems bounded by ping-pong and food. The two students are in a state of flux. The girl wanted to leave her boyfriend, or at least cheat on him; she also wants to leave her parents and go out on her own. The boy seems a little desperate. Everything is discreet, European, Italian—as underlined by everything we see, the landscape, the town, the villa, the leisurely well-prepared meals, the good behavior—though everyone is so restrained you half expect somebody to scream; and the returning third acolyte, who bangs repeatedly on the door, seems desperate enough to do so. From this it seems Maderna's is a cinema of exhaustion, whose seekers seem a little too marginalized, isolated, and repressed to discover much of anything. They are either safely and uselessly cut off from the world, or in it but endangered and lost. The film itself seems a stifled cry of desperation—though it falls comfortably within a tradition that includes Pasolini's Teorema and Antonioni's L'Avventura, as well as Bellocchio's more recent Buongiorno, notte.

Three Into Two Won't Go

Well you've got three men out at the Horgan Ranch, Glenn Ford, Ernest Borgnine, and Rod Steiger. And you got two gals on the scene, Felicia Farr and Valerie French. Valerie is married to Ernie, been fooling around with Rod and suddenly drops Rod when Glenn arrives, having been rescued by the Horgan cowhands. Ernie, who hasn't a clue what's going on with Valerie, takes a liking to Glenn and makes the stranger his foreman. Glenn in the meantime takes a shine to Felicia who's with some kind of Mennonite group traveling west. Rod's upset because Valerie's dumped him and Glenn already has a girl. And that sets the stage for the later events.

This may be a glib synopsis, but this is a nicely photographed adult western with some themes not usually explored in the Saturday matinée shoot-em-ups. The whole cast fills their roles very well and among the supporting players, particular kudos should go to Charles Bronson as Ford's friend and Basil Ruysdael as the leader of the Mennonites.

This film was made in the afterglow of Borgnine's Oscar win with Marty and he was starting to get some good parts, not your standard movie thugs. It's also interesting to compare Ford, Steiger, and Borgnine playing three different types by three very different actors.

A big stink of a movie

Apparently Russians have a whole different meaning to the movie title than the rest of the world does...but even then, its still a bad movie.

Yevgeni Tsyganov has the worst delivery since the older brother from Welcome to the Dollhouse Yana Yesipovich is cute but still doesn't fair much better. I will say the main antagonist of the flick does a good job but he's not on the screen long enough.

My head hurts from watching this movie. I mean even with subtitles its still confusing.

The one highlight to the movie is near the end, you'll know what I mean.

Passion and poetry in a carefully sculptured mix

In Dancer in The Dark, Lars von Trier told the story of a girl who could create such a vivid interior life that it could soar over any misfortune, even death. In Breath, Director Ki-duk Kim tells the story of a girl who tries to transfer a similarly strong vision to a condemned man on death row.

What do you do to raise your spirits? Listen to a song? Walk through the countryside? Go on holiday somewhere nice? Take any of these things, and they are heightened if love and desire are added.

When I was seventeen, I used to walk five miles every night. Just to hold my sweetheart's hand and kiss her goodnight. Even in winter, I felt as if I were walking on air. Sounds kinda stupid, looking back. Especially as it didn't last. But those miles disappeared in seconds.

Breath opens unremarkably. Jang Jin is on death row and attempts suicide by sharpening a toothbrush and stabbing himself with it. (He's played by Chen Chang, the sexy outlaw suitor to Zhang Ziyi in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.) The incident makes the evening TV news.

Yeon's husband is having an affair. He tells her to get out and meet people instead of staying at home making sculptures. On an impulse, she goes to visit Jang Jin. On a subsequent visit, she decorates the visiting room with blown-up pictures of spring, fills the area with artificial flowers, and sings to him. She wears a summer dress even though it is mid-winter. Yeon's poetry of life has a profound effect on Jang Jin. They fall passionately in love. But trouble brews from Jang Jin's jealous cellmates and Yeon's violent husband.

When Breath started, I admit I found it less than engaging. But suddenly these scenes that Yeon constructs for Jang Jin explode with a powerful emotional force. Have you ever been on one of those simulator machines where you step in and it starts moving about, replicating sensations that match the screen in front of you? It's that sudden. One second you are watching an ordinary prison drama, interspersed with inconsequential domestic stuff. Then Wham! You are suddenly catapulted, knocked sideways, jolted out of your seat. And that, of course, is a pale reflection of the effect we realise it must be having on Jang Jin. We start living for these intense (yet emotionally draining) moments in the film, just as Jang Jin does.

Throughout precisely architectured cinematography, Ki-duk Kim weaves a poetry of life and death. "We are already crazy inmates on death row. Until we can breathe no more." Contrasts between the two protagonists' lives outside the meeting room and what goes on inside are mirrored in verbal contrasts where one person will speak and the other stays mute. Breathing in and breathing out. Locked in a passionate kiss. Or holding one's breath underwater.

Breath also has a bitter edge. Is she preparing him for the moment when he takes his last breath? (South Korea is one of the very few fully developed democracies where the death penalty is still allowed.) Don't expect any nice redemptive ending. Like Dancer in The Dark, Breath mostly gets darker. "Even though I call with sorrow, Only the white snow falls." It may also be too laboured – even artificial – for some audiences.

Breath is an icy, chilling love story. It looks at a bond that goes beyond the simplicities of life and death. And it's as finely chiselled as a piece of sculpture. Some scenes contain a rare combination of animal intensity and poetic tenderness. The whole unfolds as a dazzling testament to the artistry of Ki-duk Kim.

Good Cast, Okay Story

In the 1950's, Universal was cranking out these Audie Murphy and Rory Calhoun Technicolor oaters at a furious pace. Calhoun gets his turn here. He may not manage Murphy's hard-eyed stare, but he does well enough in the grim determination department. Then too, this feature was fortunate to get Jack Arnold away from mutant creatures long enough to lend the proceedings his cut-above-average direction.

So, can ex-gunslinger Calhoun stay away from guns long enough to keep his promise to dying buddy Millican. Notably, this was the latter's final film, and movie veteran Millican departs on a particularly poignant note, rare for any Western, A or B. Anyway, Calhoun has good intentions, but there're always the baddies who've got other ideas. Here, the pudgy but agile Westerfield naturally wants all the land, not just some, and Sheriff Jagger is not quite up to handling his gun-toting crew. So guess who he hires as deputy. Plus the sheriff's comely blonde daughter (Hyer) helps Calhoun make up his mind, despite his earlier promise.

Now Calhoun can handle heavyweight Westerfield as their surprisingly acrobatic barroom brawl shows. But can he handle professional gunslinger Williams (Swann), who appears to have been born with a perpetual sneer. This is Calhoun's real test, after which maybe he can at last keep his promise. But then Swann is one sly gunman. Here Williams goes against type since he usually plays a good guy. But the sneer is a good touch and speaks volumes.

All in all, it's a good little Western even if it never leaves greater LA (Thousand Oaks). Thanks to Arnold, however, the pace never drags, plus there's Millican's truly moving performance, worthy I think of at least a sagebrush Oscar.

i'm sorry but for such a big fan of hist(e)orical accuracy i think, and it is just a honest opinion that you should have made a spell check on your post. Then you would have acknowledged the fact that the word "emporor" written with a capital E does not restore the Emperor's honor not even when compared to Sacha Guitry's terrible attempt...But your little spelling error tells us more about the "type of cat" you are more then it tells us about Guitry's failure to satisfy your taste in historical re- enactments. I'ts not like you had to direct a whole movie...you just made a small comment on it...and look how it turned out...well good chance in finding something better then Abel Gance's silly re-enactment...as if artistic films should do just that...re-enact things as close as possible to your own petty little view...and i see that you are not only an expert in historical movies and how they should be done, but that you are also an expert in type casting, movie business and what not...it's good to see that people like you are still around, so the whole thing doesn't crumble to pieces... keep up the good work of being you, and long live the Emporor...right right?
