Review :

Great movie stars, great scenery, satisfying B-movie.

Caught this on TCM late last night. Could not resist watching a film with Glenn Ford, Edward G. Robinson, Barbara Stanwyyck Barbara is the attractive woman you love to hate and plays it to the hilt. Edward G. Robinson is convincing as always as the villain-in-chief. Glenn Ford always a pleasure to watch. The scene in the saloon where Glenn Ford faces down the murdering henchman, surrounded by his cronies, is just what you want to see a reluctant hero do.

But what caught my attention most was the scenery. I am sure this is one of the 100 or more movies filmed in Lone Pine, California amidst the Alabama Hills* lying just north of town. Rock formations provide the rugged scenery where over 100 cowboy movies have been filmed with every major cowboy movie star. It was the setting for "Bad Day at Black Rock" with Spencer Tracy, Ernest Borgnine and Jack Palance. Films were made here with John Wayne, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Hopalong Cassidy, and it was also the setting for, surprisingly, "Gunga Din". With snow-capped Sierra Nevada peaks in the background, I tried but could not possibly identify Mount Whitney, at just under 15,000 feet, the highest point in the lower 48 USA states.

One reviewer above complains about the use of stock footage for the cattle stampede as well as for stampeding the (enemies') horses. I just marvel at the motion picture arts that they could even create such scenes at all. Did they pay some huge rancher to allow a cattle stampede??? That must have run off many pounds of expensive beef. The horse stampede must likewise have been expensive. If these were wild horses filmed at large, they sure did a skillful job intercutting the clips with the ranchers' corrals in the film.

All in all, a standard oater but with great movie stars, scenery and action, I enjoyed watching. I think you will too.

(* Oh, yes. The Alabama Hills. In California? They were named during the Civil War by miners sympathetic to the Confederate cause. If you should drive North on California State 395 en route perhaps to ski at Mammoth Mountain, spend a few minutes to detour through the Alabama Hills. And take your camera! You'll be glad you did. Well worth the time.)

No One Can Copy Marilyn Monroe !

At the first half of the 1950s Betty Grable lived a war. The war of winning the rank of "Hollywood's Top Blonde". Naturally Miss Grable, along with every single blonde bombshell in history, couldn't win that *blond* war, because – simply – Marilyn Monroe was there. The thing is in her final battle, (Three for the Show – 1955), Grable made me feel rage for using some shameful ways to win.

Review well the (How Come You Do Me Like You Do?) number. Don't you notice something? Something that had been done before, precisely 1 year earlier. Yes, you're right. It is so-close-it's-sexual-harassment to Marilyn's number (Heat Wave) from (There's No Business Like Show Business – 1954)…yet without heat !

To assure my point, the main dancer's dress is the same; just the naked bellybutton was canceled. The costumes of the male dancers are the same, white this round. The fiery red background is the same. The electrifying jazzy tone, with the intense drums and loud trumpets, is the same. The dance moves are nearly the same; trying to be as bold to end up just cold. The lyrics approach being naughty, with some double meanings; but forget it, without Marilyn's performance it's only a theoretical ambition. Maybe Betty thought; Hey, let's put many girls with the same revealing customs to make it more hot, however that proved that she can't do it alone. And in general, the saucy spirit is present but with no effect. For example my heartbeats didn't whoop, because in this case, surely, my heart belongs to "Baby" !

Watch Betty endeavoring to capture Marilyn's quavering and suggestive motions pathetically. It was like Frank Sinatra coping Elvis Presley's dancing !! Mainly there is one Marilyn, and she's copying-proof.

Connect between all of that and some indicative history information like how "the dance numbers were choreographed by Jack Cole AND Betty Grable". Or how a song like Down Boy "was originally written for Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes". How Gentlemen Prefer Blondes itself "had been firstly offered to Betty Grable". And finally how (Three for the Show) "was Betty Grable's last musical after Marilyn Monroe became officially Hollywood's Top Blonde". Hence, here, all of Grable's work, didn't eventually work !

(How Come You Do Me Like You Do?) has 3 differences than (Heat Wave) : wider stage, more cutting and too sedate Betty to be the coquetry factory Marilyn Monroe. Actually Betty Grable in this number is gold plated. Watch the original source to have the genuine gold alloy then.

I guess I really don't care.

Sometimes you just want to watch a sleazy B movie even if you are warned that it is really low budget. You just want some serial killer sleaze to watch mindlessly.

Lots of naked bodies, aberrant sex, and gore: all combined to make a film that will never see a theater screen, but will make a good slasher film for the aficionados.

Don't look for anything more, because there isn't anything. No great acting, not even good acting. No storyline that makes any real sense. Things just seem to jump all over the place.

Charles Durning will not be adding to his long list of award nominations with his appearance in this film.

It's a jungle in that ring

The Square Jungle finds Tony Curtis as an eager young man with limited prospects and an alcoholic father on his hands in the person of Jim Backus on his hand. A fact brutally pointed out by Clancy Cooper who is the father of Pat Crowley whom Tony is going out with. With the help of a friendly police captain Paul Kelly, Tony decides to become a boxer and Kelly even gets him former fighter Ernest Borgnine to train him.

Curtis is well cast in the part of the eager young middleweight who rises to the championship, but loses sight of some values along the way. That's Borgnine's other function besides training, but even he can't help Curtis when he starts casting eyes at curvaceous Leigh Snowden.

The film has some elements of Champion, The Crowd Roars, Kid Galahad and a few other boxing films. It's all a good mix for Tony Curtis who was in his salad days when he was making this for Universal Pictures.

In his memoirs he had nothing to say about this film, but I recall him on a television series where he spoke on the long past scandal of Paul Kelly committing a homicide in which he did some time. He said that Kelly was a first class gentleman and very helpful and gracious to a young actor on the way up. In his memoirs he did mention however David Janssen who plays a sports writer here and who was also part of Universal's stable of contract players then, that Janssen was convinced that he was the illegitimate son of Clark Gable. Looking at their ears I could see why he would think that.

The Square Jungle was definitely a boost for the career of Tony Curtis.

Separate tables

The lonely souls that are forced to live in places like Woodlands, one imagines would be more attuned to bonding with peers and form long time friendships with similar folks in their own circumstances. Alas, the people in this lovely Irish senior center appear to be mean spirited individuals at the end of their lives. The lead bitter existences as they have no interest in mingling with people they clearly abhor.

We come into this milieu where a four of the residents don't have a place where to spend Christmas. It is Ellie, the young sister of the woman that runs the place to stay behind to take care of this quartet. When she doesn't get anywhere with them, she lets them all know how she feels about their rudeness and ill manners. Instead of angering them, she rouses them up and make them come to their senses.

The foursome consists of Donald, the retired judge, who must have things his way. Georgia, the former showgirl who loves her martinis in a certain way. The bickering sisters Heather and Hazel Nightingale complete the group. When Ellie explodes and tells them truths they haven't heard in a while, they wake up to reality. Thus, for the Christmas dinner, Ellie decides to take the residents to a nearby town to get the ingredients. Together, they will have a great time and come together in ways no one even thought possible.

Anthony Byrne directed the film, which is based on a Mave Benchley short story. He couldn't have asked for a better cast, Vanessa Redgrave, Joss Ackland, Imelda Staunton and Brenda Flicker are seen in the major parts. They are joined by Hayley Atwell who is perfect for the role of Ellie.

This film will appeal to audiences of a certain age who will appreciate the nuances in the story and will certainly enjoy the magnificent cast chosen to bring it to life.

A year or two before this film was released, the biggest best seller in the US was a book called "The Search for Bridey Murphy," a book about reincarnation. In that book a modern woman supposedly knew intimate details of the life of Bridey Murphy, an obscure Irish woman who died in the 19th century and of whom she had never heard. This silly film, in which a contemporary (1956) man remembers details in the life of a WWI pilot who was killed in action, was obvious intended to capitalize on "Bridey Murphy"'s success. It's not a good movie.

There is one reason, and only one, to see this film, and that is to see the gorgeous Leigh Snowden. She made very few film and retired from acting before she was 30, after she, truly a woman of the 50s, married accordianist Dick Contino and dedicated herself to raising a family. If her career had been better managed, or if she had been more committed to acting, she might have rivaled some of the blonde sex symbols of the 50s, such as Monroe and Mansfield. But it was not to be. Since this film isn't on video, the only chance you'll have to see it is if you're lucky enough to catch it on cable, most likely during the wee hours. Otherwise, your best opportunity to see the Lovely Leigh is in "All That Heaven Allows," an excellent Douglas Sirk soaper. Leigh, alas, will never be seen again; she died of cancer in 1982.

A Decent Comedy

Ronald Cheng plays Scott Chung, a successful designer who all of a sudden is told he may have a son, Wayne. Wayne is about five years old and comes to live with him while a DNA test is done to prove or disprove paternity (Wayne's mom is deceased). The title of this film refers to Scott's ability to solve any problem in 3 minutes. This one proves more daunting. Wayne is mostly a quiet kid and Scott begins to get fatherly feelings. Of course, you're wondering whether Scott is the father and you know you're not getting the answer till late in the film. This is pretty much run of the mill stuff but it has its nice moments as well as a few silly ones. Wayne was raised after his mom by his aunt and you want to see whether Scott and the aunt become closer. The film is okay, with mostly actors I haven't seen before in film, and they are fine. Its kind of a "chick flick" and it works in that context. Not a bad date movie. So, I recommend marginally, but you won't dislike it.

Routine and pedestrian Western

In my view by far the best book on the Western is Phil Hardy's "The Western".It is volume one of the Aurum Encyclopedia of the Cinema a series which explores different genres in each volume.The methodology of the series is to provide capsule reviews on a year by year basis and the book has been useful in steering me towards some of the less well publicised Westerns

Phil Hardy does not deem this movie worthy of a seperate review and consigns it to a one line mention in an appendix This is a tad unfair because while routine in conception and execution it is sturdt enough and the studio obviously thought well enough of the basic plot to remake it in the late 1960's as "Gunfight in Abilene"starring the least convincing Westerner in the genre's history,Bobby Darin Mahobney plays "Jim Trask" a retuning Cofederate veteran who is pressured by old friend and ruthless entrepreneur "Dave Mosley" played by Lyle Bettger to take up his former job as the law in Abilene,a town riven by conflict between ranchers and the cattle interests represented bty Mosley who feels he can manipulate "Trask" to seve the cattlemans cause

Trouble soon breaks out and open conflict erupts between the parties before the final shootout restores order

Performances are perfunctory and the direction is routine,but genre lovers could do worse as a way of whiling away a wet afternoon

This was a d.e.f.a. released version dubbed in German , but it was in perfect sync.As Father Flanagan stated their no such thing as a bad boy.What a coincidence ,In Commie Russia you had Juvenile delinquency too.Anton Semiyonivich Makakreko, played by Vladimir Yemelyyanov ,was really concerned about this especially the children who were orphans and in poverty,He wanted to helped them to get a start in life before it was too late .This situation happens in a part of Russian in the Maxime Gorky area.He organized Maxim Gorky town or colony,This was almost like boys town.There is even a student who does wrong and gets kicked out.But he wants to come back and Anton give him a chance by cashing a check. Trusting him to bring the money back.Which he does.There are girls too who join this colony.The boys who improve their lives ,go in the area of Gorky to convince poverty stricken kids to join. Now this was made in 1955-56 and it could of been shot in CinemaScope and stereo, but Russia did not have the equipment yet.Their first wide screen film was in 1957.The boy even wear American style type boys hats . The work of a master filmmaker

The Hurt Locker is a serious character study and a taut, suspenseful action thriller at once.

The subject matter itself - the work of a bomb expert, possibly one of the most nerve-racking jobs on the planet - yields most of the suspense but Bigelow manages to squeeze out every bit of tension of the premise.

This film to me was very apolitical - though set in Iraq, it is distinguished from most of the Iraq-themed war films in that it concentrates much more on the job itself than the political environment. Iraq seemed more like a backdrop - any other war would do, The Hurt Locker does not preach about this one specifically.

The story is deeply emotional, depicting a thoroughly disturbed individual's life in hell. Jeremy Renner gives an incredibly powerful performance as an EOD officer completely hooked on adrenaline stemming from his everyday close shaves with death.

All aspects of film-making are top-notch, from the brilliantly subversive screenplay through vivid cinematography, masterful directing and perfectly paced editing.

In its storytelling the filmmakers wisely break with traditional Hollywood narrative techniques. There is no clear antagonist, no rising action, no obvious character development and no climax. And yet the film manages to be more interesting, tense and suspenseful than any Hollywood action thriller I've seen in years while making a powerful, yet subtle statement about the insane addiction that is war. Kudos for everyone involved for making this film without compromising.

This is pure quality, cinematic storytelling at its best, a thinking man's actioner.

Thrills and a hidden social commentary...

Dina and Ronnie are a couple that live a carefree life taking what they want from others. They don't pay their rent, they steal cars, and don't seem to care about the consequences. All of their fun comes to a screeching halt when Dina discovers that she is pregnant. They have no way to provide for a child, so they decide to sell their baby to a desperate couple they find online. Paul and Maria live the perfect suburban lifestyle with a brand new model home and expensive cars, but what they really want has always been denied to them. They cannot have children. The action begins when the couples meet for the first time. Immediately it becomes clear that nothing is what it appears to be. Tension builds as ulterior motives are uncovered on both sides of the deal, and what was supposed to be an easy con for Ronnie and Dina spins violently out of control.

The film opens with Dina hitching a ride with Peter, and she recounts her tale through a series of flashbacks. It's a interesting choice for a thriller. If not handled carefully this kind of narrative structure can ruin the momentum of a film, especially one that relies on thrills. However, this film has something more to offer. The best kind of horror film is the one that focuses on social issues or stigmas and turns them around to show us what we are really afraid of. Hindsight is about choice and the consequences of materialism. How much is one baby worth? Or that boat in Florida? How far will you go to get what you want? And why do you want it in the first place? That last question is the most important. It all comes back to morality, and, of course, a nice little twist ending to tie things off.

Technically the film is sound. It has some great thrills, built up by creative use of sound and lighting design. The actors deliver well enough and the plot has enough turns to keep people guessing. There's enough gore to keep the spatter crowd entertained, and some depth for those of us who like to look in to film a little more deeply. All in all, definitely worth your time.

Ifukube's score is the most action packed score ever.

The Japanese tape begins with an overture. The music with the overture is the greatest film score ever written by Akira Ifukube. So this film concerns hooded aliens who come to Earth with plans to capture and have sex with Earth women. So they release a huge bird-like robot named Mogera (it later returned renovated in Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla) to prove they mean buisness. The army manages to defeat it by booby trapping the bridge and blowing it up while the monster is using it. Then the battle for the cosmos begins with the Mysterians and their ray firing ships and the humans and their markalite lasers. This is another film I believe inspired the film Independence Day. It's certainly the most colorful of any of the fifties invasion flicks. A must. Eiji Tsuburaya also did an exellent job with his marvelous miniatures and special effects.

Blue is a young girl navigating the streets of a terrifying, sinister fantasy world all alone. When she meets Emmm, a fellow lost soul, she joins him on a quest for some ice cream. Upon arriving, they realize the ice cream shop has been taken over by dark forces, and the whole city is teeming with evil. Bizarre monsters surround Blue and Emmm on all sides until Rain, a sadistic hero, arrives to rescue them and exterminate the source of the evil.

Never has there been a film like this.

By far the weirdest movie I have ever seen. When M dot Strange was told to think outside the box, he overshot a little. He stepped out of the box, and punted it into the sea. At the screening at Sundance, M dot Strange said that he pretty much locked himself in his room with a bunch of broken toys, and nine computers. He stayed there for more than a year with only his frighteningly twisted imagination, and came out with this animation that is a mix between Stop-motion, Computer animation, 8 bit video game animation, and Japanese Anime. He calls it "Str8nime". The visuals are absolutely stunning. An electric-techno roller-coaster of a movie, with a soundtrack equally colorful. The imagination of M dot Strange is truly dark and wild.

enjoy, and hide your soul, because this film might try to take it.

Geordie... a WEE movie with a GIANT impact...

This movie is truly a classic... It is a classic story of a small boy who is tired of being small and rather than having sand kicked in his face, sends off for a "HE-MAN" mail order course... He then trains and dedicates himself to strength training and eventually grows to become an Olympic champion in the Hammer Throw, one of the Olympic strong man events... This movie is great and reminds us of days when Olympic champions were built from desire and hard work rather than todays steroids and other controversial techniques... A must see...

Worthwhile

I don't know why this movie is listed as a comedy. That's very misleading. It is a drama and a pretty good one. It's also not a horror movie, but instead a movie about horror movies. It's really a movie about itself, in that it is a low budget indie movie about some friends making a low budget indie movie. The acting is surprisingly delightful. This ranks up there with such sleepers as Primer (about the time machine) or August (about the dot com crash). It is simple, pleasant, watchable and never boring. I was glad that it didn't stoop to some cheap slasher ending. The fact that it is based in reality all the way until the end is what makes this one so special.
