Delightful unknown Roman comedy by director Bolognini.

(Some spoilers) This delightful Roman comedy stars four of the great actors of the Italian cinema in the title roles, which refer to ranks among the Roman "vigili urbani" or traffic police. We have Alberto Sordi, Peppino De Filippo, Aldo Fabrizi, and Gino Cervi. Also in the cast is the then relatively unknown Nino Manfredi.

De Filippo plays guardia scelta Giuseppe Manganiello, who is a hack composer who wants to write an anthem to be played by the police band in which all four friends play. Trouble is he starts "inventing" melodies that are actually from the works of great composers, and at one point starts humming the Star-Spangled Banner as though it were his own creation.

Alberto Sordi is guardia Alberto Randolfi. His passion is an unrestrained zeal for handing out traffic tickets to everyone, including fire trucks that are speeding, and even to a van full of nuns after an inadvertent wrong turn. At the end of the film he is sent north by the maresciallo, Gino Cervi, who is fed up with this guy's inflexibility after complaints from ticketed diplomats and officials. In Milan, among the "Nordics," he will be better accepted, though now he is forced to learn the basics of Lombard dialect, so different from Roman Italian…or French. During the movie Randolfi had tried to learn French, and he has the funniest scene when taking his qualifying oral exam in the language and can't answer simple questions but can recite a jingle about the seven days of the week!

Much of the movie centers around Aldo Fabrizi as brigadiere Pietro Spaziali. He has a daughter who wants to wed a boxer. The father approves the marriage plans, and the romance between the two young folks is not without its worries, including the question of dowry, but all works out well with the wedding being the movies penultimate scene. Spaziali's other child is Tonino, in the first screen appearance of Puckish little Edoardo Nevola. (He actually got billing in the credits and publicity higher than that of Nino Manfredi.) Nevola was to be unforgettable in IL FERROVIERE of Pietro Germi, made that same year. He would also be Fabrizi's son, under Fabrizi's direction, in IL MAESTRO.

Ettore Scola collaborated on the screenplay of this unknown gem, which was never released in the United States. Perhaps it is a trifle too parochial, a little too "Roman" to export well. Mauro Bolognini's direction is very decent, but there are very few hints of the personal style and subject matter that would characterize his later films.

The movie may have some additional historical importance as being the first Italian-made CinemaScope (Cinepanoramic) film. I first saw it in a revival at a movie theatre called the Cinema Lux in Perugia during the summer of 1971.

Review :

Not an action movie, but a tearjerker; quite effective on those terms

The original "Black Cat" (1991) was essentially the Hong Kong version of the French hit "Nikita", and it gave Jade Leung her first and still most famous screen role to date. "Black Cat In Jail" is the third film in the series, and if you're expecting an action film like the previous two, or even a typical Women-In-Prison film, forget it. It does open with Jade Leung killing people - but when she accidentally endangers a young boy in the process, she stalls to save him, giving enough time to the police to arrest her and send her to jail. There, the focus is not exclusively on her; she shares it with 3 other prisoners that she slowly befriends, and each of them is given her own story and flashback on how she got there. There is no real "plot" to the movie, it's mostly a series of incidents. And there is very little violence or sleaziness. The movie is basically a soap opera, but thanks to good, believable performances all around, it manages to be quite moving at times. Just take it for what it is, and not for what you expect it to be. Lynn Markham moves into her late husband's beach house...the morning after former tenant Eloise Crandall fell (or was pushed) from the cliff. To her annoyance, Lynn finds both her real estate agent and Drummond Hall, her muscular beachcomber neighbor, making themselves quite at home. Lynn soon has no doubts of what her scheming neighbors are up to, but she finds Drummond's physical charms hard to resist. And she still doesn't know what really happened to Eloise.

Campy Crawford film

This is a case where an aging Joan Crawford was just about done with good leading parts and the studios were only offering her "B" level scripts like this. Films were beginning to change and Crawford was not to far off from the last phase in her career. This story begins with an older drunken woman named Eloise Crandall (Judith Evelyn) chasing after her boytoy Drummond Hall (Jeff Chandler) but when she goes onto the balcony she falls over and dies. Was she pushed? Lynn Markham (Crawford) moves into the house and soon meets her neighbors like Drummond and the older couple that he lives with (Natalie Schafer and Cecil Kellaway). Their is also a nosy detective hanging around named Lieutenant Galley (Charles Drake) who thinks that Eloise may have been married. Drummond tries very hard to get Lynn to like him but she's very cold natured. One night she's lonely and horny and makes up with Drummond and they become close. Lynn finds the diary of Eloise and finds out that the neighbors are card sharks and that she was set up for her money. Also, the real estate agent Amy Rawlinson (Jan Sterling) is secretly in love with Drummond and Lieutenant Galley makes very obvious advances on Lynn! Lots of melodrama in this story and it runs like a soap opera. Chandlers character is such a pushy bum! Two seconds after meeting Crawford he is in her house making breakfast and putting his hands on her. He paws her like a Tijuana whore on a Friday night! And I thought it was funny that six foot four Chandler would come onto a woman that stands five foot in heels. Crawford is a tough woman in this film and really cracks Chandler a couple of hard ones. The dialogue is over written like when he asks her how she likes her coffee and she retorts with "Alone". Not a bad little subplot involving Sterling either. She's pretty hot looking and you have to wonder why Chandler was never attracted to her. The one scene that stands out for me is when Chandler is on Crawford like a grizzly bear and she cracks him and he responds by tearing her dress off! Rape, anyone? But of course this just turns her on. Overly melodramatic and it does have its share of laughs but at the same time you can't stop watching it. You can credit Crawfords screen appeal for that. Silly film is worth a peek at Crawford entering a part in her career that was winding down from serious roles.

Thoroughly charming and funny teen zombie horror comedy fun

I saw this at London's Frightfest a few days back after initially not planning to. I'm not the biggest fan of comedic teen oriented horror, especially not ones trying to pull of the difficult zombie comedy hybrid, since many trying to do that usually mess up the tone and end up being unsatisfying to me as a horror fan. I saw this after reading the rave critical response from a number of sites and am real glad that I did, since this film is a whole heap of good times. The plotting is fairly standard power plant causes zombie outbreak and only the geeks can save the town stuff but this film pulls it of with a great script, nicely drawn characters and best of all, a batch of fine, fresh faced performances from actors that are actually the age that they are playing. Jared Kusnitz handles the goofball to hero arc of the main character Jimmy Dunn well and Greyson Chadwick is sweet and funny as his more serious girlfriend who dumps him on the day of the prom. Justin Welborn plays the token jock in nicely layered, sympathetic and funny style and Mark Oliver is often funny as the hard nut gym teacher. As this shows, the characters are what you might expect from a high school film, but all are written with sympathy and a deft, knowing touch. The general course of events isn't too groundbreaking but there are lots of amusing imaginative touches and funny, splashy gore. The gore is very decent for a low budget production, with flying limbs, blasted heads and whatnot though I could have done with more zombie inflicted carnage. The zombies, though cool aren't particularly menacing and more gut munching, limb gnawing and such would not have gone amiss. Early on in the film there are a few instances of cutting away before people get taken out and the body count among the heroes could have been higher. The film is inclined more towards comedy than horror but a shade more intensity would have made things even better, especially since the characters are all pretty likable and the more suspenseful scenes work nicely. Still, these are minor complaints and I basically had a blast watching this. Every time I thought it was going to lag it rallied with a good line or some funny gore or a neat idea, the pace is fast and there's a charm about the whole affair that makes it very likable. Though hardcore zombie and gore fans may not appreciate this so much, this is well recommended for unpretentious, funny, put a smile on your face grisly good times.

A memorable performance by Magnani.

A great argument can be made that 'The Rose Tattoo' is a classic. It's a wonderful adaptation of a play by one of the most celebrated of modern playwrights, Tennessee Williams. It contains the performance of a lifetime by Anna Magnani, who won an Academy Award for it. The supporting cast also give excellent performances. It even has a fine score written by noted composer Alex North.

Magnani grabs hold of the role of Serafina Delle Rose and wrings everything she can out of it. She plays a lonely widow who is clinging to the idealized memory of her husband. She has little use for men (and not much more for women) until Burt Lancaster, playing an earthy truck driver, comes along and brings her back to life. Their courtship is swift and tempestuous.

Director Daniel Mann does a good job of making a movie out of what was once a play; only a few times do things get so wordy that you are reminded of the work's origin. Lancaster is fine in his role, but his character might be just a bit too broadly drawn. I was impressed with actress Marisa Pavan as Serafina's daughter, though she looks closer to 25 than the age of 15 the script says she is, not a unique occurrence in films. Her story also seems a little truncated compared to her mother's.

In ancient times, the Mongolian warlord Temujin must do battle against the rival tribe that killed his father. The battles pale in comparison with Temujin's home life, as he attempts to woo the heart of the red-haired Tartar prisoner Bortai whom he has captured in a raid. He must also deal with various intrigues within his palace. Eventually, Bortai falls to his manly charms, Temujin defeats his enemies within and without, and is crowned Genghis Khan.

Worst Miscasting Ever

John Wayne is the consummate cowboy, only Clint Eastwood comes close to approaching the title. So it's really jarring to the sensibilities to see Wayne standing there in a Mongol costume and a cheesy "fu manchu" moustache spouting barbarian lines in his trademark western drawl. It's like seeing Alec Guinness start acting like Pee-Wee Herman; some serious misalignment of the heavens has happened and maybe that guy on the corner saying "the end of the world is nigh" was right.

That aside, "The Conqueror" plays like an epic Cecil B. DeMille movie, with epic lines, epic scenery, and epic music. Say what you want about modern cinema, recent movies as a whole tend to be better researched, with characters, clothing, and sets that are historically accurate. This movie makes it clear they had no concept what Genghis Khan and his time was like. People, Wayne included, simply say grandiose lines without any inflection, as if they had no idea how to act the part.

Through it all, I kept expecting Susan Hayward to claim she was an alien or had fallen through a time machine. I doubt very many 12th century Mogolian women had red permed hair and wore low cut dresses. "The Conqueror" is either one of the worst movies you ever saw or one of the funniest.
